Regular Season Round 69: Iowa E. - Tulsa 66ers 118-112 2OT
Date: April 4, 2013
If all the Iowa Energy are playing for this week is pride, they sure showed plenty of it Thursday. The Tulsa 66ers, who could have clinched a berth in the NBA Development League playoffs with a win, kept threatening to take control of the game. The Energy were never ready to let go of it. Iowa won 118-112 in double overtime, giving their most inspired performance of a dreary season before an announced crowd of 2,794 at Wells Fargo Arena. “We were dead in the water and guys just kept hanging in there, and that’s what I’m most proud of this team,” coach Bruce Wilson said. “For all that we’ve gone through this year, it would have been very easy for us to just be thinking about ourself. But guys went out there and pulled out a great win.” Chris Wright rose up for the biggest shot of the night, a fadeaway, heavily-contested 3-pointer with 7.7 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 104-104 and force overtime. He scored 24 points. “The play broke down, and I actually thought they were going to foul. The bench was calling ‘foul,’ ” said Wright, who made the shot right in front of the Tulsa bench. “So I was just trying to get the shot up. And they always tell you when you shoot, shoot to make it. So I shot it and made it. I thought I did get fouled.” Iowa missed on three 3-point attempts in the first overtime, but tied the score again when Ben Strong made 1-of-2 free throws. In the second overtime, the Energy (13-36) started attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line. Iowa had lost five of its first six meetings with Tulsa (26-23) this season. “We’re a tough group,” said forward Othyus Jeffers, who led the Energy with 27 points. “We’re a group of guys that came from places where everyone won, so it’s hard to swallow losing. “The scouting report this time worked in our favor. There was a couple of times where they blew us out of the damn gym. So today was just our day.” Tulsa concludes the season at Fort Wayne on Saturday. That night, Iowa will finish its lost campaign by hosting another team in playoff contention, Sioux Falls. “We wanted to knock them out of the playoffs, spoil somebody’s party. So hopefully we’ll do the same thing Saturday,” Wright said. “So they can come home with us.” Courtesy of: desmoinesregister.com
