Quarter-Finals Round 1: Tulsa 66ers - Canton C. 118-99

Date: April 10, 2013
Two of the NBA Development League’s top three defensive teams took the floor in Tulsa on Wednesday night. A shootout ensued, and the 66ers packed way more bullets than the Charge. Tulsa never trailed and won 118-99 in the SpiritBank Event Center, taking Game 1 of this best-of-three D-League quarterfinal series. The Charge return home for Game 2 on Friday night, needing a win to stay alive and force a decisive Game 3 in Canton on Sunday. "They did a helluva job," Charge head coach Alex Jensen said about the 66ers by phone after the game. "They were well prepared and took it to us right from the start." The 66ers had three NBA players — Jeremy Lamb, Perry Jones and DeAndre Liggins — on assignment from their parent club, the Oklahoma City Thunder. They brought 10-year NBA veteran Rasual Butler off the bench, as well as the D-League's top 3-point shooter in Andy Rautins. It was simply too much firepower and athleticism for a scrappy Charge team to overcome. The 66ers shot a sizzling 60.8 percent from the floor and 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from the 3-point line. They committed only nine turnovers and turned Charge miscues into transition points. "Everyone knows Tulsa and Rio Grande Valley have twice as much talent as anyone in the league," Jensen said. "But that's not why they won. Defensively we were really bad. "Once they get going, it's hard to stop." Late in the game as the Charge tried to make a push, Liggins eyed up Charge power forward Ryan Rossiter on a switch and buried a deep jumper. Moments later on another switch, Rossiter found himself on Lamb, a guy who could step into an NBA game right now and put up numbers. The NBA lottery pick and former national champion at UConn toyed with Rossiter before driving for a pretty bank shot. The 118 points are the most Canton has allowed since Maine scored 123 in the season opener on Nov. 23. The Charge allowed a league-low 96.0 a game in the regular season, while Tulsa was third best at 97.4. "The frustrating thing is we were making mistakes on things we talked about going back to the first day of training camp," Jensen said. Lamb scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Butler, Rautins and Tony Taylor scored 18 points each for the 66ers, whom the Charge chose to play in the D-League's strange playoff structure. The East Division-champion Charge could not keep up, especially without leading scorer Kyle Gibson, who is out for the playoffs with a wrist injury. Antoine Agudio scored a team-high 17 points. D’Aundray Brown, Micheal Eric and Kyle Weaver scored 15 points each, although Weaver committed six of Canton's 16 turnovers. An 8-0 Tulsa run and the Charge turning the ball over on five of six possessions had Canton trailing 23-9 with 3:46 left in the first quarter. The lead got to 16 before the Charge settled in and fought back. Brown's jumper had the Charge down three points late in the second quarter. But another 8-0 Tulsa run crushed Canton's momentum. Agudio’s driving bucket had the Charge down 62-53 at the half. "We were playing really well when we got it to three," Jensen said. "But then we screw up the first option of a play we've run since training camp and they get a lay-up. Then we turn it over." The Charge shot 60.5 percent in the first half. The only problem was Tulsa shot 64.1 percent. The Charge stayed within striking distance in the third thanks to the foul line, but they could get no closer than seven. Rautins' deep jumper had Tulsa up 11 late in the third. After Liggins found Taylor for a 3-pointer with the shot clock running out, Tulsa led 90-76 entering the fourth. The Charge never seriously threatened from there. Courtesy of: cantonrep.com
