1/8 Finals Round 3: LA Lakers - San Antonio S. 89-120
Date: April 26, 2013
It had all the trappings of a feel-good Hollywood story, but the only feel-good the Lakers need at the moment is an Achilles' insta-cure, some more Metta-physical knee ointment and a cool sip from the fountain of youth. But no, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash weren't limping out from behind that door. Metta World Peace, who had a cyst behind his surgically repaired knee drained earlier in the day, couldn't answer the bell for the second half. What was left of the Lakers had to endure the punishment themselves and as might be appropriate for the 2012-13 Lakers, it was surgical precision from the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs finished with a 120-89 lead over the depleted Lakers at the end of the fourth quarter Friday night to move to a 3-0 lead in the best-of-7 Western Conference first-round series. The Lakers' final chapter of a bizarre season that never really was could be written on Sunday in Game 4 at Staples Center. Before the game, the Lakers put on a brave face. "We do have enough talent on the floor to compete with anybody and we'll give it our best shot, without a doubt," Coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It should be exhilarating for these guys. This should be fun." "I'm not going to sit up here and guys are not going to sit in the locker room and throw up the flag," Dwight Howard said. "We still believe we can with this series and a title." Still, inevitability was in the air. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker made that clear early and when the Spurs stepped on the gas in the third quarter, the Lakers couldn't even get within rear-view mirror range. The new guards replacing Nash and Steve Blake, Andrew Goudelock and Darius Morris, acquitted themselves well. Goudelock even got the Bryant "M-V-P" chant while taking first-half free throws. After all, he was the D-League MVP. Goudelock surpassed his career high of 14 and had 20 points and Morris had 15 with 6 minutes left. But the Lakers had to make their living in the middle and Howard (25 points, 11 rebounds) and Pau Gasol (9 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists) were required to bring superhuman efforts. San Antonio kept them human. Duncan made 12 of 16 shots for 26 points, Parker had 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting and the Spurs were shooting at a 59.7 percent clip. The Spurs are primed from the preseason for these moments, and they don't miss a trick. The Lakers woke up Friday morning and said, "Hey, let's try this." Goudelock scored 12 of his points in the second quarter, in which the Lakers outscored the Spurs, 26-25. It was Goudelock's consecutive 3-pointers that pulled the Lakers out of a 48-30 hole. The Lakers committed only four turnovers in the first half, providing a glimmer of hope. They committed seven in the third period and were outscored, 30-19. It was as if the Lakers were prepared for rough patches, but the whole thing was one big rough patch. If they weren't running into Duncan, there was Parker or Manu Ginobili or any number of the role players the Spurs send out to thrash opponents with execution. And they get to do it all over again on Sunday. Courtesy of: pasadenastarnews.com
