1/8 Finals Round 3: Houston R. - Oklah.City T. 101-104
Date: April 27, 2013
Kevin Durant was up to the challenge of winning without his right-hand man, but it almost didn't happen. The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Houston Rockets 104-101 in their first game in five seasons without Russell Westbrook, as Durant's 41 points were barely enough to withstand a comeback effort. The Rockets trailed by 26 points in the second quarter, and slowly cut that lead as the second half progressed. They led briefly late in the fourth quarter, before a few crucial mistakes allowed the Thunder to put the game away. Durant was simply dominant in the first half, scoring 27 of his 41 points as the Rockets fell prey to too many James Harden isolations and missed three-pointers. Serge Ibaka dominated the offensive glass, and Oklahoma City went into halftime with a 17-point lead. The wheels started to come off in the third quarter, as the Thunder missed eight consecutive shots near the end of the period to allow the Rockets to cut the lead to single digits. Key three-pointers by backups Carlos Delfino and Francisco Gracia, as well as a 30-point performance by James Harden, keyed Houston's comeback effort. With under a minute remaining in the game, a costly decision to foul Thunder point guard Derek Fisher allowed Oklahoma City to put the game away at the free-throw line. Fisher played most of the fourth quarter in place of starter Reggie Jackson, although Jackson made two free throws to give the Thunder a three-point lead with eight seconds remaining in the game. Jackson started in place of Westbrook, who suffered a torn left lateral meniscus in Wednesday's Game 2 against the Rockets, on a play many blamed Houston guard Patrick Beverley for. Oklahoma City center Kendrick Perkins hit Beverley with an illegal pick less than a minute into Saturday's game. Ibaka scored 17 points to go along with his 11 rebounds, and Jackson added 14. For the Rockets, in addition to Harden's 30 points, Chandler Parsons had 21 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Garcia added 18 points off the bench. With Saturday's win, the Thunder lead the Rockets 3-0, and can close out a series sweep with a win on Monday. That game begins at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time at Houston's Honda Center.
