1/8 Finals Round 4: Boston C. - New York K. 97-90 OT

Date: April 28, 2013
Carmelo Anthony was determined to make this game his own and put away Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce once and for all. But something funny happened on the way to Melo earning his first career playoff sweep. The more Anthony shot, the more he missed and whether you want to call it a glimmer of hope or a last stand by a couple of aging legends, the Boston Celtics are alive for at least one more game. “I was trying to win the basketball game,” Anthony said following the Celtics’ dramatic 97-90 overtime victory on Sunday. “It would have been a great feeling to close it out in Boston.” Instead, the Knicks are hosting Game 5 on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, but they will also have J.R. Smith back in uniform after the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year served his one-game suspension on Sunday for elbowing Jason Terry in Game 3. Obviously, Smith didn’t do enough damage since Terry, who won a title in Dallas with Jason Kidd and Tyson Chandler two years ago, scored nine of his 18 points in overtime, including a pull-up 3-pointer that gave the Celtics the lead for good with 92 seconds left. “He’s a fighter,” Kidd said of Terry. “He’s not a guy that is going to give up. I’ve seen it up close.” The Celtics are a team that is short on talent but has an abundance of pride, starting with Garnett and Pierce, who each scored a basket in overtime to help avoid the sweep. Garnett finished with 13 points, 17 rebounds and six assists while Pierce, who misfired on a jumper at the end of regulation, scored 29 points with eight rebounds, six assists and six turnovers. “I already called my friends in New York yesterday,” Pierce said afterward, “telling them I’d be there for dinner.” No NBA team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit and the odds of the Celtics forcing a Game 6 are slim. But on Sunday they showed a lot of character in the fourth quarter and overtime, after blowing a 20-point second-half lead and falling behind 84-82 when Raymond Felton hit a jumper with 1:18 remaining in regulation. Garnett answered with a game-tying jumper and the Celtics never trailed again. In fact, over 53 minutes of basketball the Knicks held a lead for 11 seconds. “Those guys are a bunch of fighters that don’t quit,” Kidd said. “They’re going to continue to keep playing until it’s over. We knew that coming into the series.” There was plenty of fight in the Knicks as well, especially after they fell behind 59-39 early in the third quarter. But with Garnett, Jeff Green and Brandon Bass each with four fouls, Felton rallied the team. Over the final 3:55 of the period – and with Anthony on the bench – Felton scored 10 points during a 14-3 Knicks run. When Felton hit a pull-up three at the third-quarter buzzer, the Knicks trailed only 68-65 and the momentum had shifted. But Anthony was betrayed by his jump shot. He got to the line plenty, making 16 of 20 free throws compared to 24 attempts for the entire Celtics team. Overall, Anthony scored 36 points but needed 35 shots to do so. He made just 10 and missed several pull-ups that he normally makes. “I missed him out there,” Anthony said of Smith, the Knicks’ second leading scorer. “But J.R. being out there doesn’t change the way I shoot the basketball. They weren’t falling today. My mother always said ‘there’ll be days like this.’ ” Anthony was 3-for-10 in the fourth and 1-for-4 in OT, with his lone field goal coming right after Terry broke a tie with a transition three. Terry’s fadeaway from the corner made it 93-90 and Terry sealed it from the foul line after Anthony failed to make a potential game-tying three with 20 seconds left. “You’re going to live and die with your go-to-guy,” said Felton, who scored 27 points on 10-for-21 shooting. “When the game is on the line you’re going to give the ball to No. 7. We’ve been doing that all year, there is no reason to change now.” Without Smith, the Knicks’ bench scored seven points. Boston’s reserves scored 22. Terry, coming back from the flagrant elbow, rose to his feet and fought back on Sunday, like the rest of his teammates. The Knicks shot just 34% but stayed close by grabbing 16 offensive rebounds and winning the battle of the boards 54-40. They remain one elusive victory from winning their first playoff series since 2000 and Wednesday they’ll have the chance to end it in front of their own fans. “We knew that they were going to fight for their life, which they did today,” Anthony said. “We look forward to bringing this game back home to the Garden. The Garden will be rocking. We’ll be prepared for that.” Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
