Quarter-Finals Round 3: Indiana P. - New York K. 82-71

Date: May 11, 2013
Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert spent most of the season being the fourth scoring option behind Paul George, David West and George Hill. Hibbert was fine with that. His mind was strictly on the defensive end. “As long as I’m defending and rebounding, I’m OK with that,” Hibbert said repeatedly during the season. The Pacers needed Hibbert’s offense on Saturday in Game 3 of their NBA playoff series against the New York Knicks. They actually needed it badly since the team’s top three scoring threats all struggled from the field. Hibbert was glad to step up and help his teammates out on this night, and he did it against a center that has routinely given him problems in the past. Hibbert had the best offensive playoff performance of his career — 24 points and 12 rebounds in 40 minutes — to help the Pacers beat the Knicks 82-71 in front of a sellout crowd at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Pacers lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Game 4 is at the fieldhouse on Tuesday. “I think this is his best playoff game ever,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. “He’s just oozing with confidence. Everybody wanted to sort of kick him while he was down earlier in the season when he wasn’t playing well. He’s playing extremely well on both ends of the court and that’s what we need. “We know he’s going to dominate on the defensive end, and when he has the offensive production like he had tonight, we’re pretty good.” Hibbert, who joked that it was the first time he did a postgame interview at the podium, started the day saying he planned to have a good game. He picked a good one. West was only 4-of-11 from the field, George was 4-of-17 and Hill finished the night 5-of-16. “I wanted to be around the rim, tipping balls in, creating extra possessions, try to be aggressive,” Hibbert said. “I work after practice every day on my hooks, left, right. Running with the left and the right. They were falling for me tonight. I was happy about that.” The Pacers entered the series with the frontcourt advantage over the Knicks, who start a small lineup with All-Star Carmelo Anthony playing power forward. But the Pacers have shied away from pounding the ball in to Hibbert and West in the post. That was evident by the fact that Hibbert only attempted seven shots in the Pacers’ Game 2 loss. Hibbert took a game-high 18 shots on Saturday. The Pacers can dominate the Knicks’ front line because West always exudes confidence. Now Hibbert is right there with him. “The way these guys play, it’s tough to get the ball in to the post and you can fall into the trap of overfeeding it,” Vogel said. “That leads to high turnover nights. You have to take advantage of the opportunity and we were able to get it to him at times, still not enough to my liking, but he got a lot of stuff on pure effort on the offensive glass. Just a great effort by him all the way around.” When Hibbert wasn’t scoring off hooks in the post, he was active around the basket, getting tip-ins while out-working Knicks center Tyson Chandler, a longtime nemesis. Hibbert finished with eight offensive rebounds, with his best one coming in the fourth quarter. After his tip-in gave the Pacers a 72-57 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Hibbert — all 7-2 of him — jogged down the court with a grin on his face that could light up the fieldhouse. He knew he was playing well and that his team was on its way to taking the lead in the series. “He kind of had his way tonight; that has to change,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. “I thought he was the best player on the floor tonight.” Courtesy of: indystar.com
