Mexico stepped onto the pedestal at the U17 Centrobasket tournament. They snatched a tough win over US Virgin Islands to qualify for the 2014 U18 FIBA Americas Championship. Osmar Garcia posted 20 points to lead the winners. Mexico eked out a 12:10 lead after the starting quarter. Mexico dominated throughout the second term. They accounted for a 31:22 halftime advantage. Mexico boosted the gap in the third term. They recorded a 48:37 advantage heading into the fourth period. US Virgin Islands went on a furious comeback effort in the final stanza but came up just short of victory at the end. Jeffry Suarez had 13 points, while Alvaro Mendoza chipped in 9 points in the win. Jordan Murphy answered with 19 points and 14 boards for US Virgin Islands. Rashawn Fredericks netted 11 points in the loss.
