Puerto Rico opened win count at the FIBA Americas Championship. They prevailed against Brazil in the opening game in Caracas. Renaldo Balkman fired 24 points and 8 rebounds in the winning case. Puerto Rico grabbed a 15:12 lead after ten minutes of action. Brazil narrowed the deficit in the second quarter. They got within two points at the interval 31:29. The Brazilian side surged ahead in the third quarter. Marcelinho Huertas steered the team to a 51:48 advantage before the fourth period. But Puerto Rico bounced back straight away. They erupted for 24 points in the final stanza and snatched the victory at the end. John Holland delivered 15 points, while Jose Juan Barea delivered 12 points for Puerto Rico. Marcelinho Huertas answered with 16 points for Brazil. Guilherme Giovannoni chipped in 11 points in the loss.
