Preliminary Round Day 1: VENEZUELA - MEXICO 56-65

Mexico clinched the opening win at the FIBA Americas Championship. They defeated hosting Venezuela in Group B action. Gustavo Ayon came up with 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead the winners. Mexico held Venezuela to just 7 points in the opening quarter and raced to a 9-point advantage. The hosts came back to life in the second frame. They slowly adjusted their offence and narrowed the deficit at 6-point mark 23:29 at the interval. The teams traded baskets throughout the third period. Mexico entered the fourth frame up by 6 points. The visitors fired 20 points in the final stanza and escaped with the victory. Jorge Gutierrez delivered 17 points, while Hector Hernandez added 11 points for Mexico. Luis Bethelmy and Donta Smith reacted with 10 points apiece for Venezuela.
