Second Stage Day 8: VENEZUELA - PUERTO RICO 85-86 OT

Puerto Rico snatched a tough overtime win over hosting Venezuela at the FIBA Americas Championship. The victory propelled Puerto Rico at 5-1 record on top of the second stage ladder. Venezuela fell at 3-3 record after the defeat. The hosts got to a splendid start. They erupted for 28 points in the first period and recorded a 17-point lead. Venezuela maintained the advantage throughout the second frame. They arrived at halftime up by 17 points. But Puerto Rico picked up the tempo in the third term. The visitors unloaded 31 points to cut the distance at 7-point mark. Venezuela stretched the gap to 11 points 77:66 midway through the fourth frame. But Puerto Rico answered with a 13:2 run to level things up at 79 and forced overtime. Jose Juan Barea put Puerto Rico in front 84:81 early in the extra period. Donta Smith had a chance to tie things up late in overtime but split free throws and Puerto Rico escaped with the win at the end. Jose Juan Barea finished with 30 points to lead the effort. Renaldo Balkman added 26 points and 12 boards for the winners who sealed their semifinal appearance and therefore the ticket to 2014 World Cup in Spain. Donta Smith posted 26 points and 13 rebounds for Venezuela. Luis Bethelmy had 14 points in the loss.
