Regular Season Round 2: Philadelph.76 - Miami Heat 114-110
Date: October 30, 2013
This is the tedium of the next 81. Arriving to the team hotel after 3 a.m. Playing an opponent that Vegas believes could emerge as the NBA's all-time biggest loser. Already having one of your stars decide it's time for a little R&R. "As guys were getting off the bus," Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of his team's early-morning arrival, "we all said, 'Now it feels like the season started.' " Tuesday's season-opening victory over the Chicago Bulls at AmericanAirlines Arena was pure adrenaline, shiny rings, an ascending championship 2013 banner. Wednesday night's 114-110 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Center was about the drudgery that is the NBA's 82-game regular-season slog. "We earned that," Spoelstra said. "We know that. We came to play in this game; we did not come to compete. "We have to take it to heart. That's how fragile this game is. In sports, true greatness is consistency. We did not show that tonight." The Heat could have used an extra dose of adrenaline for this one, after falling to a 22-point first-quarter hole, thanks to the 76ers' 11-of-11 start from the field and the Heat's 0-for-7 opening misery. "They jumped on us," forward LeBron James said, "and we weren't ready for that." By halftime, even with guard Dwyane Wade taking the night off to rest his sore knees, the Heat was within 51-49. Early in the third quarter, they had their first lead of the night, pushing ahead by as many as nine. But it wasn't enough, instead turning into an unsuccessful fight to the finish, with five consecutive points from 76ers center Spencer Hawes, a 3-pointer and driving layup, putting Philadelphia up 109-108 with 2:06 to play. From there, James struggled with his offense, three times failing to score. That put Michael Carter-Williams on the line with the 76ers up one with 27.5 seconds to play, with the 76ers rookie point guard making only the second of his two free throws. Down 110-108, and having played mostly isolation offense with James in the latter stages to that point, the Heat then went to forward Shane Battier, who was off with a 3-pointer, effectively ending it, the Heat's 15-game regular-season winning streak against the 76ers now over. "They took advantage of all the faults we had tonight," James said. "There were a lot of mistakes, including by myself." Understand, these 76ers are expected to be historically bad, with a bench so dreadful that they might actually miss sidelined center Kwame Brown. As it is, word is 2013 first-round draft choice Nerlens Noel likely will miss the entire season with the knee injury sustained last season at Kentucky. But in this one Carter-Williams certainly had his moments, on the way to 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals and seven rebounds in his NBA debut. His steals were the most ever by a rookie in a team's season opener. With Roger Mason Jr. starting in place of Wade a night after being inactive against the Bulls, and with Rashard Lewis moving into the rotation after missing a week of training camp due to a family emergency, the Heat ultimately did not have enough, even with 25 points and 13 assists from James and 22 points and 10 rebounds from center Chris Bosh. The 76ers raced out to a 19-0 lead, with the Heat's first score not coming until James converted a nine-foot fadeaway bank shot with 7:08 to play in the first quarter. The 76ers then made it 26-4 before the Heat began to regain their legs. "This is the reality," Spoelstra said of turnarounds like the Heat's Wednesday travel schedule, not the turnaround on the scoreboard, "dealing with meeting, preparing and the no-excuses." As ugly as it was early, the Heat scored 80 points combined in the second and third quarters, on 31-of-44 shooting over the two periods. But their execution broke down late, outscored 29-16 in the fourth quarter. "It was a one-option attack," Spoelstra said. James appeared gassed at the end of the back-to-back. "I'm getting there," he said of his conditioning, "and in the next couple of weeks, I'll be where I want to be." The next challenge figures to have the Heat's full attention, when they face the Brooklyn Nets on Friday night at Barclays Center in a nationally televised game. That's also when they again should have a full roster, with Wade planning to return. "We're going to get back to work on Friday," James said. Courtesy of: sun-sentinel.com
