Regular Season Round 3: LA Clippers - Golden St.W. 126-115
Date: October 31, 2013
Remember the suffocating, play-making defense the Warriors displayed in blowing out the Los Angees Lakers on Wednesday night? Apparently, it stayed in the Bay Area. Or maybe Chris Paul is just that good. The Warriors fell to the Los Angeles Clippers 126-115, as Paul, the All-NBA point guard, torched Golden State for 42 points and 15 assists. Stephen Curry, the Warriors' point guard, had 38 points and nine assists. But he also had 11 turnovers. The Clippers led by as much as 19 points and took a 93-80 lead into the fourth quarter. Golden State, playing the second night of a back-to-back, didn't look nearly as sharp on defense as they did in the 31-point rout of the Lakers. Paul continually broke down the defense off the dribble (though Klay Thompson had some success defending him). Plus, Golden State did a lot of fouling. The Clippers attempted 50 free throws, making 33. The Warriors made some headway with the second unit. It was mostly against the Clippers' second unit, but the quartet of Jermaine O'Neal, Marreese Speights, Draymond Green and Toney Douglas slowed the Clippers after they racked up 36 points on 50 percent shooting in the first quarter. Over the first six minutes of the second quarter, the Warriors held the Clippers to just 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting. But then the starters came in. For both teams. And the Clippers were back to rolling. Los Angeles scored 20 points over the final six minutes of the first half to replenish the lead. The Warriors starters struggled getting back on defense and frequently lost contact with the outside shooters on several occasions. The duo of Jared Dudley and J.J. Redick hurt the Warriors with 22 points combined, knocking down four 3-pointers. Three straight lobs from Paul to Blake Griffin put the Clippers up 88-70 with 4:31 left in the third quarter. But Golden State's second unit, again against Los Angeles reserves, limited the Clippers to one field goal the rest of the way. It's a longstanding tradition for Christians on both teams to have chapel together. Each NBA arena offers this service to the players, and there is always one time and one room. That wasn't the case Thursday. According to multiple sources, the Warriors were surprisingly given a separate, earlier time for their chapel services. The Clippers held their own private chapel. "Man, they don't want to have chapel with us?" one team source asked. "I never heard that before, but OK." That was the first sign that Clippers' disdain for the Warriors hadn't dissipated. The bad blood between the teams extended back to last season, when Golden State took three of four against Los Angeles. The Warriors were the only team with three victories over the Clippers, who won 56 games last season. The Clippers took exception to the Warriors' celebration antics during their victories. Once at Oracle Arena, Golden State's bench exploded into laughter after Griffin clanked a 3-pointer off the side of the backboard. By the time the teams took the court Thursday, it was clear they didn't like each other. Lots of jawing. Lots of hard fouls. Even assistant coach Pete Myers had some words with Griffin. Also, a shoving match broke out between the Warriors' Andrew Bogut and DeAndre Jordan. Courtesy of: mercurynews.com
