Regular Season Round 4: Brooklyn N. - Miami Heat 101-100

Date: November 1, 2013
The transformation was on full display at the Barclays Center, the mold of tough and assertive they envisioned from this roster. Once easy fodder for the Heat and LeBron James, the Nets outworked the two-time defending champions for most of Friday night, benefitting from a true home-court crowd advantage in a statement 101-100 victory over the Heat. It was a breakthrough for Brooklyn, snapping losing streaks of 13 to the Heat and 17 to LeBron James. The previous time the Nets beat James was in 2008, with Jason Kidd still in a New Jersey uniform. But on Friday, the MVP was mostly frustrated and tormented by his familiar adversary, Paul Pierce, the night's hero who picked up the big block against James in the fourth quarter and scored 19 points. The Heat, losers of two straight for the first time since January, have another contender in the Eastern Conference. James led the Heat with 23 points on 10-of-18 from the field, with six assists and seven rebounds. He had little help from his teammates, though, while the Nets shot 49 percent and spread the scoring between Pierce, Joe Johnson (19 points), Brook Lopez (13), The Heat, waking up a little too late, cut the deficit to 99-98 on James' 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left, before Johnson sealed it on the foul line. Mikhail Prokhorov was up in his suite, watching his money in action. Before the game, the Russian owner was up to his usual deadpanning and boldness in an interview with YES Network. It felt like a victory speech after he shelled out about $189 million for this season on salaries and luxury tax. "Hell yeah," Prokhorov said was his reaction when presented the trade for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. "Heck no," Prokhorov said when asked if the luxury tax was ever a concern. The Nets were preaching patience in the last two days following their opening night defeat to the Cavaliers. But Friday felt like they took about five steps forward. The Nets set the tone from the start, jumping out to an 11-3 advantage. But the big early moments were courtesy of Jason Terry. During a two-minute cameo in the first quarter, the backup guard buried a 3-pointer, trash-talked the Heat bench and joined in the crowd's "Brook-lynn" chant. He hit another 3-pointer a minute later, and the Nets led after the first quarter, 27-18. Terry raised his arms, encouraging the Barclays Center to get louder. It seemed Brooklyn immediately identified with its new team. But James started to assert himself in the second quarter, flexing his superior athleticism and grimacing at the Nets after finishing a dunk. The score was tied at the break, 47-47. In the third quarter, Garnett jumped into the crowd and chasing a loose ball - destroying a seat just a few away from Magic Johnson. There must've been a few seconds of panic as Garnett was slow to get up. But he hobbled back on the court, and finished with six points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes. The Nets made their move in the third quarter, going on a 26-9 run to take a 16-point advantage. It mostly occurred with Williams, Garnett and Lopez on the bench, as Pierce scored 11 of his xx in the third quarter. The Nets led, 78-67, going into the fourth. The Heat were still hanging around when Shaun Livingston soared over Chris Bosh for a lay-up, extending Brooklyn's lead to 13 with 6:55 remaining. Pierce followed with a jumper over Ray Allen and the block against James. The Barclays Center exploded. Joe Johnson nailed a 3-pointer with four minutes left. Game over. Way back in July, just after his introductory press conference with Pierce and Garnett, Jason Terry provided his theory on the Heat. In short, he's wasn't losing any sleep. "I'm not concerned," Terry told the Daily News that day. "We have the formula. Jason Kidd and I are the only ones to crack that code." On Friday, the Nets had enough firepower to duplicate what Terry and Kidd accomplished with the Mavericks in the 2011 Finals. But more substantial than just one regular season victory is how the offseason acquisitions have infused the Nets with confidence. That's progress, according to Williams, who said last season's Nets were intimidated by the Heat before they stepped on the court. "I just think the mentality of this team is different," Williams said. "We have a lot of guys who can play now, and they aren't scared." Scared would seem an appropriate description for last season's Nets. They shrunk in big moments, including three blowout losses to Miami. When James publicly accused them of quitting on former coach Avery Johnson, the collective response was silence, fearing anything else might motivate LeBron James. The new Nets, though, have already taken their shots at James and Miami. Garnett basically told the media that James should shut his mouth. Pierce body-checked James in a preseason game, calling it a message to the league. On Friday, the Nets sent a bigger message to Brooklyn and the NBA. Courtesy of: nydailynews.com
