Regular Season Round 2: Halifax R. - Ottawa S. 100-111

Date: November 6, 2013
It took one game longer than they would have liked, but the Ottawa SkyHawks picked up their first National Basketball League of Canada victory Wednesday night in the second game in franchise history. Against what coach Kevin Keathley called the cornerstone of NBL Canada, the SkyHawks (1-1) shrugged off a low start and hustled their way to a 111-100 victory over the Halifax Rainmen (0-3) at Canadian Tire Centre in front of an intimate gathering of 541 fans, who undoubtedly left the building entertained. “They’re probably one of the top two teams talent-wise. I don’t mean playing a team concept, but they’re good at every position,” Keathley said of the Rainmen, who are in their seventh year of existence. “We knew, them being a veteran team, that out of the gate they were going to play very well. They were fighting with everything they had in them, and they played well.” “We made some adjustments at halftime and changed how we were guarding pick and roll action, and in the second half, with the exception of a couple of breakdowns, we played very well defensively.” What the SkyHawks did all game was play well offensively, led by Justin Tubbs and his team-high 26 points. “We came early a little shaky, kind of fatigued, then we went and played our game,” Tubbs said, after watching his team go down by 12 at one point in the first quarter only to trail by just five at the half. “Our game is to run, and we may not get you the first, second or third quarter, but come the fourth quarter, we’re gonna have legs, and we’re gonna run. That’s what we did, and the whole team came together in the fourth quarter and everything started to click.” The SkyHawks outscored the Rainmen 25-17 in the fourth quarter and 53-37 in the second half. More importantly they held Stephen Sir to just five fourth-quarter points, although he did finish with a game-high 29. What was lost in the game was significant atmosphere off the court with such a small crowd. While Ottawa is used to university basketball, Tubbs says the professional game offers quite a bit more to entertain the fans. “It’s a fast 48 minutes of basketball,” the product of East Tennessee and native of Trussville, Ala., said. “Usually, in college, you have to slow it down, but that’s not what this coach wants to do. It’s really a fast, uptempo type of basketball and always exciting to watch. There will be a lot of three (point attempts), a lot of dunks and a lot of attacking to the rim. “In this league you have a lot of really athletic players, and it’s really fun to watch.” The SkyHawks are in London Saturday to take on the defending-champion Lightning.
