NBA
Regular Season Round 11: Orlando M. - Boston C. 89-91
Date: November 8, 2013
The supposedly lottery-bound Magic turned heads with an impressive three-game winning streak by slaying up-and-coming New Orleans, loaded Brooklyn, and the talent-laden (and Doc Rivers-led) Los Angeles Clippers. The Magic’s next opponent didn’t look so tough in comparison, but the Celtics, Rivers’s former team, proved otherwise Friday by pulling out a 91-89 win, their second straight. It’s becoming custom for these Celtics to take games to the wire, and this one was no exception. The Celtics held a 90-87 lead with 10.5 seconds left after Brandon Bass sank a pair of free throws against his former team. But on the other end, Magic guard Aaron Afflalo, who scored a game-high 23 points, made an 18-foot bank shot with 4.6 seconds left that made it a 1-point game. With the Amway Center crowd roaring and on its feet, Avery Bradley was fouled and made one of two free throws with 3.5 seconds left. Magic rookie guard Victor Oladipo fired a long 3-pointer at the buzzer but it missed, sealing the win for Boston, which improved to 2-4. Six Celtics scored in double figures, and Bass led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Bradley added 14 points and eight rebounds. The only lopsided statistic in the box score was points off turnovers, where the Celtics had a 25-8 advantage. The Magic had 20 turnovers overall. The Celtics won despite shooting 36 percent from the field and 2 of 14 from 3-point range. Courtesy of: bostonglobe.com
