Regular Season Round 14: Philadelph.76 - San Antonio S. 85-109

Date: November 11, 2013
First-year Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown, a former San Antonio assistant, referred to his old team as "a machine" before the Sixers faced the Spurs on Monday night. San Antonio then plowed over Philadelphia, 109-85, as guard/forward Danny Green scored 18 points and point guard Tony Parker added 14 points and nine assists. The San Antonio Spurs put on a system-basketball clinic Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center – playing defense, moving the ball to find the open man and crashing the glass. Tony Parker weaved his way through the Philadelphia 76ers, finding open teammates as the Spurs went on to win, 109-85, in a battle between teacher and student. “You have a weird feeling either way,” Spurs head coach Greg Popovich said of coaching against his former assistant. “If you win, you sort of feel bad. If you lose, you’re sort of happy for the other guy. Which is also a weird feeling, since you’re supposed to come here and win, every game you want to win.” Parker finished the game with nine assists, but he wasn’t the only Spur looking to share the ball. As a team, they had 29 assists on 44 field goals. And making the extra pass for the better shot pay dividends in their shooting percentage, as they finished the game at an amazing 49 percent clip. “I think the ball movement was great,” Parker said. “All our shooters are getting their rhythm back.” “We moved the ball really well and we started the game making a lot of shots,” added Spurs guard Manu Ginobili. “Defensively we were pretty solid. They couldn’t make outside shots and we started to get tighter in the paint. We got a quick lead and it made things easier for us.” The 3-ball was working all game for San Antonio. They relied on using the extra pass to get open shooters, and they took full advantage of those open shots. San Antonio separated itself from the Sixers late in the first quarter. Tiago Splitter went to the line and knocked down a pair of free throws. That started a 14-0 run to close out the final 3:08 of the opening quarter. The Spurs took advantage of three straight missed jumpers by the Sixers followed by turnovers on three consecutive possessions during the run. The closest the Sixers got in the second half was 18 – only one point less than the deficit they faced heading into the half. Philly looked its best at the start of the second quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the frame. They forced the Spurs into some tough shots and turned the long misses into transition points. But Parker calmed things down, taking the outlet pass from Danny Green following a rebound, driving it down court and finding Boris Diaw in the lane for the bucket. Michael Carter-Williams continued to come back down to Earth following his torrid start to the season. He had another lackluster night shooting the ball, only making 2-of-11 shots from the floor for eight points. He only managed four assists while turning it over twice. “He’s been pretty good at the beginning of the season,” Parker said of Carter-Williams. “I think he surprised everybody, but as always in the NBA you have to keep improving. People are going to adjust and defenses are going to adjust, but he’s going to keep improving. He has great talent and those long arms and he’s in great hands with Brett Brown. I’m not worried about him, he’s going to keep improving.” Evan Turner had another big night scoring, leading the Sixers with 20 points. Unfortunately only Spencer Hawes (17) and Tony Wroten (13) joined him in double digits. Courtesy of: nj.com
