Regular Season Round 17: New York K. - Houston R. 106-109

Date: November 14, 2013
The ovation was slight, cheers coming from scattered sections of Madison Square Garden, when Jeremy Lin was announced into the game midway through the first quarter. It wasn’t Linsanity as much as a slight longing and who could blame the fans? At least those who applauded Lin had something to cheer about as the Knicks dropped their fourth straight game at the Garden. And the rest could imagine that the joy they felt two years ago was still here instead of a 109-106 loss and a 3-5 record in a dismal start to the season. Two years ago it was magic. The Garden was the place to be — or actually anywhere Lin was was the place to be as he embarked on a magical mystery tour, the out-of-nowhere sensation who drew throngs of fans to see what became a worldwide sensation. Heroics streamed from his fingers, somehow living up to what had become stifling hype. So for one night it was again, but for all the wrong reasons for Knicks fans, except those still tied to Lin. They could cheer as Lin emerged from a quiet night, suddenly pouring in long jumpers and blowing by defenders, even dunking twice. Carmelo Anthony, who some blamed for the parting of Lin, was as good as he’s been this season — pouring in 45 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani added 24 points. Lin had 21 points and five rebounds, not spectacular, not myth-making, but efficient enough for a victory. “I was just having fun out there,” Lin said. “You know, I miss playing at the Garden. It’s great to come back here once a year and play. The fans are great. The atmosphere is incredible. It was just a lot of fun for everyone.” The Knicks would probably differ on those last three points. They were booed at times on their own court — which has decidedly not felt like home. Still, the Knicks had a chance after trailing by nine midway through the fourth quarter. With 39.3 seconds left the chant was “defense” as Lin lost control of the ball, resulting in a 24-second violation that gave the Knicks a chance to tie. Anthony misfired on a three-point attempt, but the Knicks got one last chance when Anthony blocked a James Harden drive, resulting in another 24-second violation with 5.8 seconds left. Anthony took the inbounds pass and was fouled by Harden before he could get a shot up — just by a hair as Anthony was hit and then tossed in a three-pointer that was waved off. Despite Knicks coach Mike Woodson’s protests, the play is not reviewable. Anthony made the first free throw and then attempted to miss the second — but made it, giving Houston back the ball. “Right now I’m still trying to get our team to understand the details, paying attention to the little things to help you win games,” Woodson said. “We’re just not there yet.” Linsanity was here and then it all ended just as quickly as it came. A knee injury sidelined him for the last month of the season and when the Rockets came courting with a huge, three-year, $24.9 million offer — backloaded to force the Knicks to decide whether to swallow a huge luxury-tax hit — the Knicks let him walk away. There was never an explanation given, just that they’d moved on. Even now, asked about Lin accepting a sixth-man role in Houston — and flourishing in it — Woodson didn’t want to talk about it. “I’m so far removed from Jeremy being here,” Woodson said. “We’ve moved on in that regard. I’m not going to even comment on that or entertain that. He was here and he was good for us when he was here. We moved in a different direction. We’ve moved on.” What direction is just what may trouble Knicks fans. What was a brief period of wonderment has turned into, well, wonderment but for all the wrong reasons now. The fans are left to listen to Garden chairman James Dolan, who played no small part in the decision to pass on matching the offer to Lin. Since then his résumé has included creating a division of Creative Artists Agency in the Knicks’ locker room — securing not only J.R. Smith, but his brother Chris, and Woodson, who dumped his agent to join CAA, too. It didn’t seem to matter much what the reasons were for the parting. The fans still held a place in their hearts for Lin. And it didn’t hurt that he’d begun to emerge as the player that the fans dreamt he could be, scoring 31 and 34 points in the Rockets’ past two games before he returned to the Garden. “Sure he’s advanced. He’s a better player,” Woodson said. “He had his ups and downs when he first went into Houston, but he’s starting to come into his own now as a player. That’s what you expect when you play in this league. You expect to get better, find signs of guys getting better and he’s gotten better.” Courtesy of: northjersey.com
