Regular Season Round 4: Windsor Exp. - London L. 84-108
Date: November 15, 2013
The London Lightning played like a different team Friday night. Tough defence, better shooting, more enthusiasm and a certain amount of urgency all went together for a 108-84 victory over the previously unbeaten Windsor Express before 2,907 fans. “More intensity,” Lightning owner Vito Frijia said simply. This all come on a night when the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse program was front and centre and more than $63,000 was raised for the London Abused Women’s Centre. The improved play could not have come at a better time for the NBL’s Lightning. With the win, they are now 2-2 and have two more games this weekend — Saturday night in Brampton against the unbeaten A’s and a 4 p.m. start Sunday against Mississauga Power at Budweiser Gardens. With 14 players still in town — counting newcomer Maurice Carter who has not been cleared by FIBA to play and the injured Al’lonzo Coleman — and a 12-player roster limit, the Lightning plan to reduce their roster and soon. “After this weekend, we’re going to have to make some tough decisions,” Lightning general manager Taylor Brown said. Brown said the team wants to make room for Carter, 30, a Richmond, Va., native and a star in the Venezuela league. “He’s proven scorer. He’s done a lot at a high level over in Latin America,” Brown said. “And he provides veteran leadership and his resume speaks for itself.” Starting a lineup that mixed young — Garrett Williamson and Raheem Singleton – and older players — Elvin Mims, Tim Ellis and Marvin Phillips — the Lightning raced to 27-22 lead at the quarter and a 15-point lead in the half. They had a 20-point lead in the third. Garrett Williamson led the Lightning with 21 points and Gabe Freeman, in limited court time, added 16. Quinel Brown had 23 points for Windsor. Newcomer Jason Forte, in his first game, had 13 points and played every bit as well as expected. Courtesy of: metronews.ca
