Regular Season Round 19: LA Clippers - Brooklyn N. 110-103

Date: November 16, 2013
Preventing mass attrition over an 82-game season was always expected to be a lofty challenge for the Nets, a very talented but veteran-heavy team. The injury bug, though, was probably not expected to bite so soon. The Nets’ 110-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night was just their ninth game this season, but they played it with four of their five starters inactive because of injury. The Nets’ led by 11 points midway through the third quarter, but the Clippers proved too much, and the Nets finished their three-game West Coast trip with a 1-2 record. Blake Griffin leapt and muscled his way to a game-high 30 points while grabbing 12 rebounds for the Clippers. Chris Paul added 12 points and 13 assists, and DeAndre Jordan had a game-high 16 rebounds. The rookie Mason Plumlee was a bright spot for the Nets, as he scored a career-high 19 points over an active 26 minutes off the bench. The only blemish on his night was a 5-for-12 performance from the free throw line. Meanwhile, it was an illustrious list of infirm. Deron Williams sprained his left ankle in the first quarter of Nets’ overtime win Friday night against the Phoenix Suns and was unable to return to the game. In the fourth quarter of that game, Brook Lopez and Kevin Garnett got their feet tangled and came up limping. Both played through the end of that game, the two were nursing their own sprained ankles Saturday — the left one for Lopez, the right one for Garnett. And, Paul Pierce was out with a strained left groin muscle. “He’s had that a couple games ago, from what I think I recall,” Coach Jason Kidd said of Pierce. “It was bothering him a lot last night.” And on top of those more recent injuries, Andrei Kirilenko, expected to be the team’s top bench player when the season began, was back in New York, rehabilitating a sore back that caused him to miss a fourth straight game. “That’s the way the league is built,” Kidd said. “You’re going to have guys that are going to be out some nights. Other guys are going to have to step up.” Results were mixed in that regard. Joe Johnson, who hit a layup at the buzzer Friday night to secure the win, scored 13 points Saturday on just 5-of-17 shooting. Shaun Livingston, who was another bright spot Friday while filling in for Williams, shot just 4 for 14. The game turned the Clippers’ way for good when Paul tossed a long alley-oop pass to Griffin with 2 minutes 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter — a thunderous two-handed slam during an 18-0 run that made it 72-67. That seemed to precipitate an end to the Nets’ evening. The absences of Garnett and Pierce — they were not at the arena at all Saturday — meant they missed an opportunity to be reunited on the court with Doc Rivers, who coached the Boston Celtics for nine seasons before moving to the Clippers this past June. Rivers said it was fine for him to miss out on seeing his former players, with whom he won a championship in 2008. He said he spoke to them on the phone and via text message more now than he did when they were in Boston together. And he said coaching against them would have felt almost like playing against his son, Austin, a player for the New Orleans Pelicans. It would present a confusing mixture of loyalties. Still, he was eager to sing their praises. Asked about what he enjoyed about coaching Pierce and Garnett, he said: “They’re just so darn professional. I caught them at the perfect time.” Rivers said the fact that the two had already gone through long individual careers helped them prioritize the team’s success, noting that there was “very little clutter. Rivers reminisced in particular on the joys of having Pierce, whom he called a “professional scorer,” at his disposal. “I don’t know how he scores,” Rivers joked. “He looks like he’s going one mile an hour, and yet he’s always open and he always makes big shots. That was nice to have.” The Nets did not enjoy that luxury — or the luxury of three other starters — on Saturday night. Courtesy of: nytimes.com
