Regular Season Round 23: Cleveland C. - Washington W. 91-98

Date: November 20, 2013
Coaches can live with missed shots or mistakes when the players are being aggressive. Cavaliers coach Mike Brown is fed up with the lack of effort from his team. “We didn’t compete,” he said after the Cavs’ 98-91 setback to the Washington Wizards on Wednesday before 16,189 at Quicken Loans Arena. “We had one guy who competed the entire time he was on the floor — Matthew Dellavedova.” Brown has changed his starting lineup and tinkered with his rotation. He might start drawing straws. One can be sure of one thing, however. He’s not going to sit by and do nothing. “I have to find guys who are going to give it to me,” he said. “It’s a concern for anybody when you don’t go out there and compete and play hard.” The Cavs (4-8), who have lost four of their last five games, fell behind by 27 points midway through the third quarter. Brown was asked if his players are buying into what he has to say. “I feel like they are listening and have responded,” Brown said. “To go through lulls like this, I’m not going to sit back and just watch it. “It’s a young team. You’re going to go through ups and downs with a young team.” Brown yanked his starters and played Dellavedova, Dion Waiters, Jarrett Jack, Henry Sims and Anderson Varejao. That group clawed their way back to 80-59 after three quarters. “I finally found five guys who were going to play hard,” Brown said. “They attacked the rim. They set solid screens for one another. The biggest thing was defensively. Anyone can see the last 18 minutes of the game.” Brown eventually inserted guard Kyrie Irving and forward Earl Clark into the game in the fourth quarter. The Cavs narrowed their deficit to four points on three occasions. But they could never get the defensive stop they needed. Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal, who was 6 of 7 from behind the arc, had a team-high 26 points. Teammate Nene added 24 points and eight rebounds. Irving finished with a game-high 28 points, 18 in the fourth quarter when the Cavs outscored the Wizards, 32-18. The Cavs now embark on a rugged two-game road trip in New Orleans and San Antonio. They are just 1-6 on the road this season. Cavs center Anderson Varejao recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Cavs shooting guard C.J. Miles’ night lasted 2 minutes, 32 seconds. He left with a right calf strain and didn’t return. “It’s frustrating,” Miles said. “It just gave out on me. I can’t catch a break.” He said it’s the same injury he had in the preseason. He will likely miss a few games. Waiters, who had been benched, replaced Miles and ended with 11 points and three assists. The Cavs were booed lustily in the third quarter. “They are the best fans in the world,” Irving said. “Whether they boo or cheer for us, they are there for us. “We get paid to play out there. We’re all in the foxhole together. We have to fight.” Courtesy of: morningjournal.com
