Regular Season Round 24: Denver N. - Chicago B. 97-87
Date: November 21, 2013
he Bulls kept one streak alive. Unfortunately, it was the wrong one. The Bulls' five-game win streak ended Thursday night with their seventh straight loss at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets ran away and hid in the fourth quarter of their 97-87 triumph. The Bulls also have lost 12 of their last 13 here. Nate Robinson hit two 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to kick-start a 13-0 run, during which Tom Thibodeau drew a technical foul. Derrick Rose scored 19 points to lead the Bulls but only managed four in the second half. He didn't play the final 6 minutes, 56 seconds. Taj Gibson got ejected with 76 seconds left for jawing with official Sean Corbin and drawing his second technical foul. Mike Dunleavy got the nod over Kirk Hinrich to replace Jimmy Butler in the starting lineup and scored 15 points in 29 minutes. "I like both guys," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "I don’t want to disrupt the second unit." Jordan Hamilton's 17 points led six Nuggets in double figures, including two off the bench. Butler's turf toe injury that will sideline him for the six-game trip tests the Bulls' depth. Thibodeau has been using a nine-man rotation featuring spot minutes for veteran center Nazr Mohammed. Thibodeau praised rookie Tony Snell's work ethic but said he remains a "work in progress." So how do the Bulls handle the loss of a wing player who plays heavy minutes? "That's part of the challenge," Thibodeau said. "You also have to weigh the decision of you could play Marquis (Teague) with Kirk at the two. You’re also looking at your opponent. Are they playing small? I think all those things weigh into it. We have confidence in Marquis’ ability, in Tony’s ability. Whoever is called upon, get in there and get the job done." Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said his game plan doesn't change with Butler out, mostly because of how good the Bulls are. "Regardless of who they have playing, Thibodeau has his system in place," Shaw said. "It doesn't matter who plays. You just plug in the next guy and it works. (Gregg) Popovich in San Antonio is that way. And Thibodeau's team is that way. "They're so versed at the way they defend. That's where they hang their hat, on their defense."
