Regular Season Round 25: Boston C. - Indiana P. 82-97

Date: November 22, 2013
The Celtics returned home from a brutal, three-game road trip Friday night looking to turn over a new leaf on the parquet against the top team in the Eastern Conference. Instead, all they did was turn the ball over — again, and again, and again — throughout the second half on their way to a sixth straight defeat. Boston fumbled, tossed away and hand fed the ball to the Pacers throughout the final 24 minutes as an eight-point halftime lead turned into a 97-82 loss. “If you would have told me that we were going to shoot 51 percent against the Pacers tonight," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said, "I would have said: ‘We’ve got a chance to win the game.’ And we do, if we don’t throw them the ball." The Celtics turned the ball over 11 times in the third quarter, and another five times in the fourth, as the Pacers pulled away. "You’ve just got to value the ball like gold," said Celtics forward Jared Sullinger, who missed the morning walkthrough due to illness. "Key turnovers can’t happen. They can’t happen. I think that was on us collectively as a group. Maybe we didn’t run to our spots as hard, maybe we didn’t cut as hard. We have to go back to the film and watch it — see what we didn’t do. "They turned up their defense and we didn’t turn up our offense. We didn’t play with the same intensity as we did in the first half." Jordan Crawford slipped into the deep freeze after hitting his first nine shots for 21 points by early in the third quarter — not scoring again until 3:09 remained in the fourth — on his way to 24 points in the game. Jeff Green scored 20 points and Sullinger had 13 points and five rebounds. Starting center Kelly Olynyk left the game late in the first half after landing awkwardly on his ankle. He said after the game it wasn’t the type of "intense, intense" sprain that can keep you out for a month, but was unsure of his ability for Saturday’s game in Atlanta. Down nine entering the fourth quarter, rookie Phil Pressey gave the sagging Celtics a bit of a lift to start the final 12 minutes as he tracked down a loose ball, hit a free throw and found Brandon Bass for a bucket in the first minute of the fourth. "I thought Phil gave us some good minutes," Stevens said. "We got hit with that counterpunch in the third quarter pretty hard. Phil gave us a spark. I probably should have left him in and just went small." A Sullinger free throw and bucket had Boston within 73-66 with 7:58 left before a quick Pacers blitz gave them their first double-digit lead of the night with 6:40 to go. The Pacers turned Boston’s 20th turnover of the night into a goaltending call and 13-point lead, then George converted a three-point play for an 82-66 gap with 5:48 left. Sullinger scored the next basket, but the 21st and 22nd turnovers of the night led to two more Pacers baskets in a row and they cruised into the final minutes of the game comfortably ahead. A Green 3-pointer brought Boston within 92-80 with 1:52 left, but Crawford hit the deck on a drive for Boston’s 23rd turnover of the evening, and the Pacers closed out the game without drama. "It’s about us," said Wallace, who committed five turnovers. "We’ve got to stay together for 48 minutes. We did a great job against a great team for the first 24 minutes. Then for the first eight minutes of the third quarter we kind of backed down, and let them do what they wanted to do. We let them take control of the game and demand the game. We’ve got to, as a team, stick together for 48 minutes, play hard, and figure a way out of this slump." An impressive first half was followed by a disaster of a third quarter for the second straight game. On Wednesday, the Celtics were tied at the half against the Western Conference-leading San Antonio Spurs before allowing 32 points in the third quarter on their way to a fifth straight defeat. Boston was up eight at the half against the Eastern Conference leaders on Friday, and this time it was the comical display of turnovers that helped erase the lead and send the Pacers to the fourth quarter up 67-58. After committing seven turnovers in the first half, the Celtics gift-wrapped 11 possessions for the Pacers the third quarter alone was they were outscored 25-8 in the 12 minutes.
