Regular Season Round 1: Tulsa 66ers - Iowa E. 117-127
Date: November 22, 2013
Larry Owens stood motionless at the free throw line, seemingly in disbelief as his fourth-quarter free throw rattled around the rim and fell harmlessly to the court. It was that kind of second half for the Tulsa 66ers, whose 15-point halftime lead disintegrated in the wake of Iowa’s scorching second-half shooting as the Energy notched a 127-117 victory in the NBA Development League season-opener on Friday at the SpiritBank Event Center. Kalin Lucas, a former Big Ten Player of the Year at Michigan State, scored 18 of his 23 points after halftime, including a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that gave Iowa its first lead of the night. Lucas scored 12 of Iowa’s 39 points in the fourth quarter as the Energy connected on 13-of-20 field goal attempts in the period. Iowa’s Othyus Jeffers led all scorers with 30 points and added nine rebounds and seven assists. “We didn’t show a lot of intensity at the start of the third quarter,” said Tulsa head coach Darko Rajakovic. “In the first half, we were shooting well and playing good defense. For us, everything starts with good defense. We didn’t have that in the second half.” Despite forcing 27 Iowa turnovers, Tulsa couldn’t capitalize on Energy errors in the late stages of the game. Former University of Tulsa guard Ben Uzoh’s three-point play with 1:37 left in the game pulled Tulsa within 119-113, but Iowa scored the next eight points to ice the victory. Rodney Bartholomew and Mario Little each scored a career-high 22 points for the 66ers, who had eight of their nine active players score in double-digits. Tulsa’s Grant Jerrett, the top pick in this year’s D-League draft, was out with an ankle injury. His status for Saturday’s rematch against the Energy is unknown. Tulsa got off to a quick start, jumping to a 10-2 lead and forcing an Iowa timeout with less than three minutes elapsed. The break did the Energy little good as Tulsa turned up its defensive pressure. Iowa got no closer than 11 points the rest of the first half, with Tulsa taking a 69-54 lead into intermission. The 69 points scored by the 66ers in the first half were a new high for scoring in a half under Rajakovic. Courtesy of: tulsaworld.com
