Regular Season Round 26: Golden St.W. - Portland TB 101-113
Date: November 23, 2013
Fast approaching panic stage, the Warriors' health situation received a much-needed shot of positivism Saturday night -- the return of Stephen Curry. Curry's return wasn't enough to deliver a win, however, as the surprising Portland Trail Blazers overcame a 14-point deficit and two ejections from a third-quarter scuffle to beat the Warriors 113-101 Saturday night at Oracle Arena. Curry, out for two games with a mild concussion, was deemed healthy enough to play just before game time, and for a good long while, it looked as though he would be the perfect tonic for the Warriors' ending a two-game losing streak. But Golden State suffered a fourth-quarter meltdown at both ends of the floor against the Blazers, who got 30 points and 21 rebounds from LaMarcus Aldridge in upping their record to 12-2. The game was marred by a scuffle with 3:42 left in the third quarter and the Warriors leading 79-71. Golden State center Andrew Bogut tangled underneath the Portland basket with Blazers backup center Joel Freeland, touching off a melee that took nearly a minute to contain. Aldridge, Mo Williams and Wesley Matthews came to Freeland's defense and went after Bogut, and the Warriors' Draymond Green jumped into the fray to help out Bogut. No serious blows were struck, but there were six technical fouls called and three ejections rendered -- Portland's Williams and Matthews and Green for Golden State. But the melee seemed to ignite the Blazers and take all the air out of the Warriors. Despite taking a heavier hit from the referees in the fight, Portland rallied to tie the score at 86-all with 10:57 to go on a three-point play by Aldridge. With the score subsequently tied at 92-all, Portland went on a 12-0 run for a 104-92 lead with less than three minutes left to effectively put the game away. Freeland hit short jumpers on back-to-back possessions to start the run, Aldridge hit four free throws, Nicolas Batum hit a shot underneath and Oakland native Damian Lillard, who scored 20 points and dished nine assists, hit two free throws with 3:14 left to make it 104-92. Curry was good in spurts and scored 22 points with 11 assists but hit just 8 of 21 shots (2 for 9 from 3-point range) and committed five turnovers. Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 30 points on 10-of-13 shooting but was in foul trouble throughout the game and finally fouled out with 5:07 to go. The Warriors led 54-49 at the half despite Curry hitting just 3 of 10 shots, and none of his four attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. But Thompson, who finds a lot more offensive openings when Curry is in the backcourt alongside him, made 7 of 8, including two 3-pointers, for 18 points. Golden State opened up as much as a 12-point lead in the second period, a quarter that started in promising fashion when rookie Nemanja Nedovic made the first 3-pointer of his NBA career. Nedovic gave the Warriors seven solid minutes at the point, six of them while Curry was out. Portland went on a 9-0 run late in the half to get back within striking distance. The Warriors limited Portland to just 38.6 percent shooting in the opening two quarters while shooting 50 percent themselves (21 of 42). Former Oakland High star Lillard had a rough opening half, making just 2 of 11 shots. Courtesy of: mercurynews.com
