Regular Season Round 7: Brampton A's - The Island S. 101-100
Date: November 24, 2013
Cedric Moodie's last shot was his best shot and it gave the Brampton A's a 101-100 buzzer-beater win over the Island Storm on Sunday in Charlottetown. Storm forward Antonio Ballard's layup had given the Island squad a 100-98 edge with four seconds left in the National Basketball League of Canada game and completed a four-point, late-game run. Amid the hoopla of excited players and spectators at an energized Eastlink Centre, Moodie got the ball near half court, took a few dribbles and launched a moon shot that hit nothing but net as time ran out and slapped the Storm with its third straight loss and a 4-5 record. Moodie said he thought Brampton head coach David Magley would call timeout after Balland's score to set up a play. Instead, the A's pushed the ball up-court hoping for a chance. And they got it. "I don't know, by the grace of God it went in. The philosophy was that while they were scrambling and celebrating we might get a good look. I wanted to take that shot as captain of this team, as a veteran," said Moodie, who finished with 18 points and 4-for-8 from the three-point line. "(This win) definitely gives us confidence." Brampton, new to the NBL this season, ups it record to league-leading 8-2. The Storm, after beating the Moncton Miracles eight days ago in Moncton, N.B., lost road games last week in Ottawa and Windsor, and with Sunday's defeat is 0-3 against the Central Division. Still, Storm captain Al Stewart, who keyed the late-game comeback, was upbeat after the game and not concerned the loss might linger. "An A for effort. (Moodie) hit a tough shot, a contested three-pointer, at the end but that's basketball. It's a stepping stone, I think. The defensive intensity was there," said Stewart, who had 11 points and eight assists, including one on Ballard's last basket. "I have to say that was the funnest game I've been in all season. The first time playing them. It was fun going back and forth with these guys. I wish it was (the winning) side of the column." Ballard led all players with 31 points and 10 rebound while Greg Plummer drained 18 points and Antoine Tisby had 13. Cavell Johnson led the A's with 21 points while Flenard Whitfield had 15 points. Evaldas Zabas tallied 14 points and led all players with 13 assists. Whitfield grabbed nine rebounds for Brampton. The Storm host the Mississauga Power on Saturday.
