Regular Season Round 28: Dallas M. - Denver N. 96-110

Date: November 25, 2013
Apparently it doesn’t matter to the Denver Nuggets where they play the Dallas Mavericks. On Saturday, the Nuggets defeated the Mavs in Denver 102-100. A day later, the Nuggets hopped on a plane and flew to Dallas where they beat the Mavs again, this time 110-96 Monday night before a stunned sellout crowd of 19,677 at American Airlines Center. The second setback to the Nuggets — fueled by some dramatic fourth-quarter shooting by Nate Robinson — was the Mavs’ first home loss of the season, dropping them to 9-6 overall and 7-1 at home. It was a night where, after a fast start, the Mavs never got a firm grip on the Nuggets, who shot 54.7 percent from the field and outrebounded Dallas, 42-36. “We got beat three out of four quarters and we tied one of them, so it was pretty thorough beating,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “Other than a great start and a bit of a run in the second half, we were unable to get any sustained traction, so it’s an L.” Along the way in this disappointing loss, Dirk Nowitzki scored 18 points and passed Kevin Garnett to become the NBA’s 14th all-time leading scorer. But that was one of just a few highlights for the Mavs, who turned the ball over 13 times and shot 46.3 percent from the floor. The Nuggets controlled the game for the most part, but a basket in the lane by rookie Gal Mekel got the Mavs within 89-85 with nine minutes left. However, a pair of three-pointers by Robinson from right in front of the Mavs’ bench pushed the Denver lead back to 95-85 with 6:56 left. Robinson, in fact, completely took over this game when it was still hanging in the balance. Following his first pair of triples, Robinson knifed through the lane for a pull-up jumper, then knocked down another three-pointer to give Denver a 100-87 lead with 5:30 remaining. Robinson wound up scoring 13 of his 17 points in the fourth period. Meanwhile, the Nuggets also got 22 points and eight boards from J.J. Hickson, 19 points and 11 assists from Ty Lawson, and 10 points and 10 boards from Kenneth Faried. Monta Ellis led Dallas with 22 points, Jose Calderon scored 12, Shawn Marion collected 13 points and 12 boards and DeJuan Blair finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Blair started at center in place of Samuel Dalembert, who is battling bruised ribs. Dalembert played 18 minutes and finished with a season-low two points, a season-low tying three rebounds and two blocks. In the opening six minutes, Blair picked up a pair of fouls and went to the bench in favor of Bernard James. But when James committed a foul and turned the ball over twice in the final six minutes of the first period, he gave way to Dalembert, who started the second period. “Sam missed shootaround [Monday] morning because he overslept,” Carlisle said. “So the two guys that were there got the first two rotations, and then he played after that.” Carlisle tried several combinations in an effort to slow down the hot-shooting Nuggets. “I was looking for energy, a spark,” he said. “We didn’t have much competitive energy tonight and the guys on the bench are the guys that have got to give it to us.” Carlisle then took blame for the loss. “This is a coaching loss,” he said. “I didn’t have these guys ready to play — it’s clear. “I’ll take the blame for this. Just didn’t have them ready to play.” The Mavs trailed only 56-51 at the half, but never could get back the form which led them to that early 22-11 lead. “Prosperity is always one of the challenges in pro sports because teams can strike back so quickly,” Carlisle said. “You’ve got to be able to sustain it, and we didn’t do it tonight.” Courtesy of: star-telegram.com
