Regular Season Round 8: Windsor Exp. - Ottawa S. 105-102

Date: November 29, 2013
A couple of things were revealed Friday night at Canadian Tire Centre, and both of them bode well for professional basketball in Ottawa. First was the fact that the Ottawa SkyHawks, despite dropping a 105-102 decision to the visiting Windsor Express, are an exciting young team and showed a lot of character in making a game of what could have been a blowout. Second, there appear to be a lot of enthusiastic basketball fans in the city outside of the university scene. The announced crowd of 1,250 seemed to be enveloped by the 18,000 empty seats, but there was no shortage of electricity, especially in the fourth quarter when the SkyHawks were making their run that just fell short. “These fans should come out and embrace this team,” SkyHawks coach Jaren Jackson said. “These guys play with their hearts, with spirit and we’ve got a young crew that are learning and growing as professionals and it’s good to do that here in Ottawa.” Here in Ottawa, the SkyHawks have played seven of their first nine games in this, their inaugural season in the National Basketball League of Canada. Twice in those seven games the Express has been the visitors and twice the Express has won, handing the SkyHawks their only two home losses of the season. The first was a 113-105 setback in the SkyHawks’ first game ever back on Nov. 2. Wednesday the Express led 52-41 at the half and 79-67 after three quarters. Then the fun started. The SkyHawks chipped away at the deficit and even took the lead several times in the final minutes, much to the delight of the crowd who jumped out of their seats after every basket. A last second three-point attempt from Mike Rose hit them rim as at the buzzer but failed to drop and force overtime. “They played with a lot of pride and it just showed their resilience, and that’s what I was expecting. We were trying to do a little chess match out there and we found ways to get the right combination to get a little run,” Jackson said. “They’re competing and some of these teams are very good. We’ve got a lot to work on.” Tirrell Baines led the SkyHawks with 23 points while Ryan Anderson chipped in with 21 to remain among the league leaders in points per game. “That was a tough loss,” Anderson said. “We fought hard and we came back, but we’re still learning. We looked a little lackadaisical early but we turned it around. Our guys off the bench stepped up big time. They came with a lot of energy and helped turn it around for us.” The SkyHawks outscored the Express 35-26 in the fourth quarter and even the miss by Rose at the buzzer is something Anderson feels will not be a problem down the road. “I believe we will make those plays and I’m really excited about the future with this team,” he said. Stefan Bonneau had a game-high 33 points and hit six of his three point attempts for the Express. Chris Commons had 25 points for the Express. Courtesy of: ottawacitizen.com
