Regular Season Round 9: Moncton M. - London L. 91-101
Date: November 30, 2013
The London Lightning left the competition for dust at Budweiser Gardens Saturday night, beating the Moncton Miracles 101-91. On paper, the Miracles didn’t look good, with a 2-9 record for the season, against the Lightning’s 6-2. And it turned out pretty much as expected, with the Lightning in charge all night, watched by a crowd of 3414. The London men showed their intentions early, with Garrett Williamson taking advantage of a Miracles mistake and taking the ball more than halfway up the court to score, barely four minutes into the first quarter. The B. C. visitors had their moments but they’d had a long journey to London and many of them looked tired. It took until more than halfway through the second quarter before Moncton even drew level, and it didn’t last. The period was tighter, but still the Miracles just couldn’t take the lead. Halfway through the game, the Lightning led 53-50 and, in truth, it could have been a much wider margin. The Miracles didn’t stop trying, though. They nosed ahead, briefly, in the third quarter but the period ended with the Lightning 77-74 ahead. It got bad-tempered at times, too, with some puzzling decisions by the referees, confrontations on the court and London coach Micheal Ray Richardson even more vocal than usual. With six minutes to go, a foul by Moncton’s Alex DesRoches had the sides exchanging angry words, and the officials spoke to both coaches, to cool things down. The final quarter was more competitive but the Lightning had all the energy. They stretched their lead and there was nothing the Miracles could do. Courtesy of: metronews.ca
