Regular Season Round 32: Memphis G. - Brooklyn N. 88-97
Date: November 30, 2013
It had all the makings of another disastrous night for the Nets. Their commanding second-half lead was all but gone and FedEx Forum was roaring its approval. In a season during which seemingly everything possible has gone wrong for the Nets, it would have been easy in this moment to cede to momentum and let another game slip away. Instead, the Nets steadied themselves and finished what they had started. The Nets held off the Grizzlies on Saturday night, securing a much-needed 97-88 win. The Nets (5-12), losers in 10 of their previous 12 games, were led by 26 points from Joe Johnson, 23 from Andray Blatche and 20 from Brook Lopez. It was their first win in Memphis since 2010. The Grizzlies trimmed the Nets’ 15-point, second-half lead down to 75-74 with about 10 minutes remaining, which had the crowd standing and waiting for the knockout. But the Nets answered with an 11-2 run to secure control of the game. Friday night in Houston, the Nets thoroughly were embarrassed early — they trailed by 26 at halftime — on the way to an overwhelming loss. That first-half performance was so bad that coach Jason Kidd benched his starters in the second half and questioned their effort and energy. After scoring only two points, Paul Pierce was one of those starters benched in the second half. He missed Saturday night’s game in Memphis with a bruised right hand. “He’s been playing with some injuries,” Kidd said. “His hand, it’s a little swollen; so they’ll look at it and see how he feels [after the game]. But we felt it was the best for him to get some rest.” Pierce has been struggling for the Nets in recent weeks. In his past seven games, Pierce has shot 28.2 percent from the field, averaged 11.1 points and 2.7 turnovers. But Kidd is confident better basketball is yet to come from Pierce. “He’s a veteran guy and he’s going to work through what he’s going through,” Kidd said, “and we believe in that locker room that he’ll turn for the better.” If Kidd was sending a message to the other Nets’ starters, it most certainly was received Saturday. Playing their fourth game in five nights, the Nets found their legs early thanks to Johnson. He played the entire first quarter, scoring 16 points on 5 of 8 shooting as the Nets took a 24-19 lead. In the second quarter, Brooklyn pulled away thanks to a 10-0 run, which included two three-pointers from Blatche. Early in the third, the Nets surged ahead to a 52-37 lead. But the Nets, who have struggled in the second half this season, let the Grizzlies get back in the game with a 15-6 run to cut the gap to 58-52 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Nets responded, pushing the lead back to 71-57 late in the third after seven consecutive points from Blatche — including his career-high third three-pointer — and a three from Mirza Teletovic. But from there, Memphis went on a 17-4 run that brought the home crowd to life. Less than three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies cut the lead to 75-74 on a Quincy Poindexter three-pointer. The fans were roaring and there was no doubt: If the Nets were to secure a much-needed win, it would take a big-time fight. Courtesy of: northjersey.com
