Regular Season Round 7: Austin T. - Delaware 87ers 114-102

Date: December 1, 2013
The Austin Toros received reinforcements from the San Antonio Spurs and defeated the Delaware 87ers 114-102 for their first win of the season Sunday. The Spurs assigned guard Nando De Colo and center Aron Baynes to the D-League on Sunday morning, and both players were in the starting lineup for the Toros’ home opener at the Cedar Park Center. “The goal was to play a little bit,” De Colo said. “(Since) the beginning of the season, I haven’t had much time on the court, so I could come here and have more time. My situation hasn’t been easy (with playing time), but it felt good to come out and play.” Both players had been buried on the NBA roster and had recently been used sparingly in blowouts for San Antonio. Sunday was a one-game assignment, and they’re expected to rejoin the Spurs for Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks. Before driving south on Interstate 35, De Colo and Baynes helped the Toros pull out a victory after the 87ers rallied in the third quarter. Austin led by as much as 15, but Delaware cut the lead to two points at 84-82 before the fourth quarter. The Toros scored the first eight points of the final frame to regain a comfortable lead, including a pair of put-back dunks by Baynes. The 87ers stopped the run but couldn’t slow down the recently reassigned duo. De Colo finished with a game-high 29 points and eight assists, despite playing the entire second half with four fouls — three of which he picked up in the first quarter. Baynes added 24 points and nine rebounds; he also connected with De Colo on a pair of alley-oop dunks to put an exclamation point on the victory. It was the professional debut for former Texas Longhorn Myck Kabongo. Kabongo, who left Texas after his sophomore season, entered the game late in the second quarter and played 15 minutes, 31 seconds, scoring his first professional points on a layup in the fourth quarter. Austin will return to the Cedar Park Center at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a matchup with the Texas Legends, the first of home-and-home games against the Dallas Mavericks’ affiliate.
