Regular Season Round 10: Ottawa S. - Brampton A's 114-102
Date: December 2, 2013
In getting a league best 9-2 record to lead the National Basketball League of Canada standings the Brampton A’s did just about everything right. But on Monday night at the Powerade Centre everything seemed to go wrong for the A’s during a fourth-quarter where the Ottawa SkyHawks outscored them 36-13 over the final 12 minutes on the way to a 114-102 victory. That snapped a five-game winning streak for the A’s who had not played since last Monday. Less than two weeks ago at the Powerade, Brampton defeated the SkyHawks 124-87. Brampton looked to be on its way to another victory, with a 17-point lead in the third quarter and being up by 11 points heading into the fourth quarter. Ottawa came out with plenty of energy in the fourth quarter, scoring six points in less than a minute and had managed to tie the contest, two minutes into the fourth. Brampton coach Dave Magley said he made a mistake in not trying to stop the Ottawa momentum with a timeout. “They scored four quick points and then it got to 11 points. I should have called a timeout. I had veteran guys out there, I thought they would figure it out,” he said, calling it a “rookie coach’s mistake”. Since the last time the two expansion teams had played, the SkyHawks have made a coaching change naming former NBAer Jaren Jackson as head coach. Ryan Anderson who scored 21 points, also had nine rebounds for the SkyHawks, who improved to 6-5. Fred Sturdivant with 16 points also had a game-high 16 rebounds. Mike Rose also collected 16 points. Justin Tubbs had 12 points, Jerice Crouch 11 and Jamie Vanderbaken 10. The A’s were led by Cedric Moodie with 18 points. Evaldas Zabas had 15, Scotie Haralson and Melvin Council 14 each and Cavell Johnson, the NBL’s Player of the Week last week managed 11. Ottawa which shot just 31 per cent from the field in the first half, shot 51 per cent in the second half, to finish at 41 per cent for the game. The A’s who shot 48 per cent in the first half, made only 38 per cent in the second half and wound up at 43 per cent for the game. On Monday Magley was named the NBL Coach of Month for November and he credits that to just how good the A’s organization is. “That’s a testament to the Tipping family (the team owners). They have the best facilities in the league, they give me the best assistant coaches in the league and they let me get the guys I want,” said Magley. The same two teams will play on Thursday night in Ottawa. The A’s host the Moncton Miracles on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Powerade Centre. Courtesy of: bramptonguardian.com
