Regular Season Round 12: Windsor Exp. - London L. 117-111

Date: December 7, 2013
It was London-Windsor rivalry, Day 2. One night after the London Knights clinched an overtime win against the Windsor Spitfires, the basketball version of the 401 rivalry played out Saturday at Budweiser Gardens. The London Lightning, however, came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard Saturday with a 117-111 National Basketball League of Canada loss to the Windsor Express before 3,189 fans. Rivalry scoreboard after the two games: London 1, Windsor 1. It was the Lightning’s second loss in three nights after eight straight wins. It was their second loss to the Express this season. London plays again at home Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Brampton A’s. After being down by as much as 21 points in the first quarter, the Lightning led after the third. the last quarter was their final undoing, outscored 33-25. Stefan Bonneau led the Express with 32 points. For the Lightning, Garrett Williamson had 27 points — before taking an undetected elbow to the head causing an ugly gash over his right eye — and Jaytornah Wisseh had 25 points. The Lightning’s Greg Surmacz knows more than most about this London-Windsor rivalry. After playing for the Express last season, he switched cities and team colours this season. No regrets, the injured power forward said. Out with a sprained ankle, he returns to the lineup Thursday. “I think (the rivalry) is just one of those things that carries over from hockey and other sports,” Surmacz said. “You talk to people in this city what team they hate, it’s Windsor. And you talk to people in Windsor about what team they hate and they hate the teams from London. “It’s just one of those things with the proximity. They both have storied franchises in multiple sports.” Lightning general manager Taylor Brown said the Windsor-London rivalry extends to all levels of basketball. “For some reason, every since I have been playing basketball, Windsor has always had tough teams, whether it be OBA, whether it be high school and it has carried on with the Express,” Brown said. Unlike last time in London when there were three technicals, resulting in suspensions to Lightning’s Marvin Phillips and ex-Lightning and current Express player DeAndre Thomas, Saturday’s game was a tamer affair. Thomas was released by London last season. “It was a clash of personalities with (Thomas) and Micheal Ray (Richardson) . D’Andre is a good guy,” Brown said. “There was nothing personal. He understood when we released him and luckily he got on with another team and he has been playing well.” Perhaps Thomas has a long memory. Richardson once cut Thomas from his Premier Basketball League team in Oklahoma, and he made the cut at halftime. Courtesy of: metronews.ca
