Regular Season Round 12: Brampton A's - London L. 108-101
Date: December 8, 2013
The London Lightning were beat by the Brampton A’s 108-101 Sunday (Dec. 8) at Budweiser Gardens to lose their third straight game for the first time in the team’s three-year history. The Lightning had 20 turnovers, they shot 62.9 percent from the free throw line going 22-for-35 and rained only one three pointer on 14 attempts. “We fought hard, but we didn’t play smart enough. We had too many defensive lapses,” said London guard Garrett Williamson, finishing with a game-high 36 points. “It’s really the same thing we’ve been dealing with for the last couple of games, we just got to get back into the gym and figure it out.” It’s been said countless times and the saying really ramped up in this past offseason — This is a guards’ league. There’s some truth to it. A little more than half the baskets scored in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) have been by guards. Six of the nine teams in the league have a guard as their leading point getter. The heavy shooters seem to have found a home in the Great White North. There have been 53 guards in the NBLC so far this season, while 73 forwards and centres have seen the courts in Canada and are being tossed around like a Wiffle ball. You can hardly call the Lightning a guard team, though. London’s guards have scored just 43.6 percent of their team’s points — that’s second worst in the NBLC. The Lightning are also the only club with four forwards in the double-digits for scoring. During London’s preseason training camp coach Micheal Ray Richardson made it known he wanted better defensive guards, not offensive. In return, only one guard — Antwi Atuahene — was put back on the roster from the 2012-13 defending championship team. Williamson is so athletic he can play almost every position and swapped in as a forward in Sunday’s game. Guard Jaytornah Wisseh is maybe the quickest player on the team and makes it tough for an opponent to get lose. Guards James Millen and Raheem Singleton look like they’re always putting on the press on their opponent, but are very much defence-first type players. Neither has played a game this year where they’ve scored in the double digits and are the only players on the Lightning who haven’t scored 10-plus points in a matchup. “As a guard you got to pressure up, force the guards to penetrate,” Wisseh said. Something isn’t adding up, though. Opposing guards have scored 50.8 percent of the points against London. Guards scored 61 points in Sunday’s game, which is the third time this season (13 games) the Lightning have given up 60-plus points from the backcourt shooters. The Lightning’s guards have scored 546 points and opposing guards have 651 points. That’s a 105 points difference going the wrong way for London. “We got to go back to the drawing board, we got to look at some things and we got to get it fixed and that’s my job. My job is to get it fixed,” Richardson said. “We may have to change some things, but whatever I got to do I’m going to do it. “Something has to happen and it will.” The Lightning will host the Mississauga Power — a team they were beat by on the road last Thursday (Dec. 5) to start the losing skid — next Thursday (Dec. 12).
