Regular Season Round 44: Brooklyn N. - LA Clippers 102-93
Date: December 12, 2013
As the final moments of the third quarter ticked away, a celebration was raging at Barclays Center. The Nets had pushed their lead to more than 20 points. Reserve Andray Blatche was putting on a show; and the crowd stood and roared at its highest decibel level of this young season. Things were finally coming together for the Nets, and in the excitement of the moment it would have been easy to miss the concerning sight of Brook Lopez limping down the tunnel toward the locker room. The Nets cruised past the Clippers, 102-93, on Thursday, showing a national television audience what kind of team they can be when healthy. It was one of the finest, most complete performances of the season. But a signature performance against one of the best teams in the Western Conference came with a major caveat for the Nets: Lopez, their starting center, left the game with a sprained left ankle in the third quarter after scoring 16 points. Lopez, who missed seven games earlier this season with a sprained left ankle, said the ankle felt “good” after the game and said he planned on making the trip to Detroit for tonight’s game against the Pistons. “It’s very frustrating,” forward Kevin Garnett said. “Because I felt like we’re in a good rhythm and everybody’s starting to understand their role in this.” Garnett’s assessment was born out on the court, where the Nets were downright dominant before Lopez left the game. The Nets fell behind early, but starting late in the first quarter Brooklyn outscored the Clippers, 73-39, until the end of the third quarter. Joe Johnson and Blatche led the Nets with 21 points apiece. Paul Pierce contributed with 10 points off the bench. But the most important minutes of all were from Deron Williams, who scored 15 points in his second game back from an ankle injury. “He’s pushing the pace,” Garnett said. “He’s directing and he’s leading. He’s being Deron Williams, and I really feel like that’s the difference.” Thursday also marked the first time that Garnett and Pierce played against former coach Doc Rivers — the trio teamed up for six seasons in Boston, winning a title in 2008. Before the game Garnett broke from his intense pregame routine to run over and give Rivers a hug. Meanwhile, Pierce joked with Rivers that he “knew all his plays.” Rivers, who made an emotional return to Boston on Wednesday night, said that it was strange to see the players he coached for all those years in another uniform. Both Garnett and Pierce have struggled for the Nets this season, but Rivers made it clear that they have more to offer to the Nets. His former players left no doubt about how they felt about Rivers. “I grew under him,” said Pierce, who played three seasons for Rivers before Garnett joined the Celtics in 2007. “I just continued to mature and become an all-around better player under him. Before, I was really known as a scorer and he took over and taught me the other parts of the game … just helped my game grow and mature.” Garnett agreed with Rivers, saying it was “weird” to see him on the opposing bench. “But I’ll always have a special place for Doc,” Garnett said. “I thought he helped me grow, not only as a player but as a young man. He taught us a lot. … I am just grateful that he came into my life and [I’m] able to say I had that experience with him.” For a night, at least, they had bragging rights over their former coach.
