Regular Season Round 14: Ottawa S. - Brampton A's 101-114
Date: December 14, 2013
The Brampton A’s exacted some revenge on the Ottawa SkyHawks on Saturday night. The A’s delighted their fans who were able to brave the snowstorm as Brampton earned a 114-101 victory at the Powerade Centre in National Basketball League of Canada action. Brampton is in first place in the league with a 12-5 mark but has struggled against the SkyHawks, having lost three consecutive contests to the fellow expansion team. With the victory on Saturday Brampton is 2-3 in league play against Ottawa with three more games left between the teams. The A’s were missing Jameson Tipping for the contest. He was serving the first game of a two-game suspension for punching an opponent during a game last Wednesday against Ottawa. The team came out with a three-guard starting line-up of Melvin Council, Cedric Moodie and Evaldas Zabas to go with forwards Kevin Francis and Flenard Whitfield. That seemed to work as the team had an outstanding first quarter outscoring the visitors 29-11. However, Ottawa got back into the game with a 35-20 advantage in the second quarter and then outscored the A’s 33-31 in the third. Brampton finished strongly, outscoring the visitors 34-22 over the final 12 minutes to claim the win. Zabas had a season high of 29 points along with four assists, four steals and no turnovers in 36 minutes. Council had 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists while Moodie had 21 points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals. Whitfield had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with nine points while Cavell Johnson also scored nine and corralled six rebounds in 18 minutes. Jerice Crouch led the SkyHawks with 25 points, Ryan Anderson added 11, Tirell Banies 13, Fred Sturdivant 11, Mike Rose and Jermaine Johnson 10 apiece. The A’s head into Christmas with four games in five days but they don’t have to worry about much travel. They start on Thursday night visiting the Mississauga Power at the Hershey Centre with the two teams hooking up the next night at the Powerade Centre at 7 p.m. The Power, which defeated Ottawa on Sunday at the Hershey Centre, is 7-9. Brampton hosts the Halifax Rainmen on Saturday. That game is Toys for Tots Night. Fans are asked to bring new unwrapped toys or to make a cash donation to members of the Peel Regional Police who will be on hand, for the program which helps children in need. The Rainmen got off to a slow start this season but recently made a coaching change, bringing in former Chicago Bull and three time NBA all-star game three-point shooting champion Craig Hodges. The Rainmen have won their last two games and improved to 3-10 on the season. Centre Tim Parham was named the NBL player of the week on Sunday. The Rainmen will also be playing a third game in three consecutive nights, with contests in London on Thursday and Windsor on Friday. On Monday, Dec. 23 the A’s host the two-time defending league champion London Lightning who are third at 9-5. That is also a 7 p.m. contest. Courtesy of: bramptonguardian.com
