Regular Season Round 15: Halifax R. - London L. 90-108

Date: December 19, 2013
Halifax’s demanding three-game road swing through Ontario got off to a rocky start Thursday night in London. The host Lightning dominated the Rainmen 108-90 in front of 3,607 fans at Budweiser Gardens, snapping Halifax’s modest two-game winning streak. Canadian guard Garrett Williamson scored 18 points to pace the Bolts’ balanced attack. London used an 11-0 outburst in the first quarter to jump out to an 18-7 lead and never looked back. “They were able to impose their energy on us early,” Halifax coach Craig Hodges said. “We dug ourselves a hole and we weren’t able to get out of it.” That’s frequently been a problem for the Rainmen, now 2-11 on the season. In six of their last seven outings, they’ve fallen behind by 13 or more points in the second or third quarter. In most of those games, they’ve fought their way back to within striking distance but only once have they managed to complete the comeback. Because they’ve expended so much energy engineering rallies, “then we don’t have enough energy to close the games, so that’s something we have to work on as a unit,” Hodges said. Small forward David Lawrence, with 18 points, topped Halifax in scoring for the third straight game. Point guard Cheyne Gadson added 16 and Olu Famutimi, in his Rainmen debut, dropped 13. George Goode and Jason Williams netted 10 each. The visitors never led. After London jumped ahead 5-0, the Rainmen drew even at 7-7 before the Lightning’s first big push. Halifax closed to within 21-15 on a Raven Barber hoop with 2:47 left in the first quarter but London (10-5) finished the period ahead 29-18. The Lightning began the second with a 12-2 spurt to open up a 21-point bulge. The Rainmen trailed 57-38 at the half and were down as many as 29 early in the fourth quarter before closing the gap down the stretch to avoid their worst loss of the season. Hodges said the Rainmen, who continue their gruelling road swing tonight in Windsor against the Express (11-6), could do nothing but “take a shower, wash (the loss) down the drain and get ready to play tomorrow.” On Saturday night, they’re in Brampton to play the A’s (13-5) to conclude their three-game road set against the National Basketball League of Canada’s top three teams.
