Regular Season Round 25: Iowa E. - Tulsa 66ers 123-93

Date: December 22, 2013
Othyus Jeffers and Larry Owens both played considerable minutes in April 2011 with the Washington Wizards. They were reunited Sunday. Owens, a 6-foot-7 small forward and Oral Roberts product, joined Iowa via a Thursday trade from Tulsa and helped the Energy defeat the 66ers 123-93 on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena. “The guys here accepted me right away,” said Owens. “Sometimes when a new guy comes in, the other guys don’t want to talk to them. These guys have treated me like I’m family. The crowd was nice to me, the coaching staff is great. It feels good to be back on the court.” Owens scored 18 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Jeffers, the NBA Development League’s third-leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, had a double-double by halftime, including a rim-rattling dunk in the second quarter. He finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Jeffers says Owens brings numerous talents. “He’s a hard worker. He brings us another force to be reckoned with,” Jeffers said. “He’s a good defender and good playmaker, also a good rebounder and he’s overall a great guy.” Former Iowa State guard Chris Allen led the Energy with 22 points, and Moses Ehambe had 18, all from 3-pointers. Ehambe and Owens played together with the 66ers (1-11) before being sent to Iowa. They also played at Oral Roberts in 2005-2006 and helped the Golden Eagles reach a NCAA tournament after a 22-year drought for the school. “Great guy,” Ehambe said. “He’s very excited to be here and I’m very excited for him to be here and to play with a Golden Eagle again. He’s a winner. I won with him at Oral Roberts and Tulsa. He’s very athletic, he rebounds and he can score the ball. He’s a big, long guy. We’re glad to have him.” Owens, 30, played 25 minutes and is glad to be back with some former teammates. “It’s a good feeling to have familiar faces here. It helps being in a new place,” he said. “They’re great guys. I’m just happy to be here and be able to play.” Iowa (7-3) never trailed Sunday and held the Thunder affiliate to just 35 percent shooting. “I really enjoyed the way we came out and played defense,” Energy head coach Nate Bjorkgren said. “That was what created our offense tonight, so that’s what I was pleased with most.” Courtesy of: desmoinesregister.com
