Regular Season Round 16: London L. - Ottawa S. 98-90
Date: December 22, 2013
Micheal Ray Richardson played Santa Claus on Sunday. The London Lightning coach delivered a win for Christmas. “That was for our fans,” he said. “Ho, ho, ho.” The Lightning drove through some wet and icy weather on Saturday, taking nine hours to get to Ottawa to play the SkyHawks on Sunday. The trip was worth it, though. The Lightning came home with a 98-90 win over the SkyHawks in a National Basketball League of Canada game. That will be the Lightning’s last game before Christmas. While Richardson is suited to play the jolly fat man who delivers happy things at Christmas, the man who really delivered the gift was power forward Marvin Phillips. Phillips had a double, double. He had 13 points. But where he really came through was on the defensive and offensive boards. Phillips had a monster game with 16 rebounds — many of them in key situations with the SkyHawks looking to make a run. Phillips crippled Hawks with offensive rebounds on the fourth quarter. “Marvin couldn’t be stopped on rebounds,” Richardson said. The Lightning also got 21 points from Garrett Williamson with guard Tony Bennett adding 15. Bennett is starting to get a little more comfortable with the Lightning offence. Curtis Withers connected for 12 points while Tim Ellis had 10. Jerice Crouch led the SkyHawks with 17 points but was only one of 11 from three-point range. It was that kind of defence that allowed the Lightning to stay in control of the game throughout. The defence forced the SkyHawks into tough shots, leaving them only six of 30 from beyond the arc and 32% on the game. The Lightning needed good defence because they continue to have some turnover issues. Despite the win, they had 22 turnovers on the day, 11 more than the SkyHawks. “It was a team win and we played great defence and that’s what you have to do,” Richardson said. “But again, we had way too many turnovers. We have to fix that.” The Lightning led throughout the game with most of the lead into double figures. But the SkyHawks did threaten to get back into the game late in the fourth quarter. They had cut the Lightning lead to seven when Phillips went to the basketball and drew a blocking foul from SkyHawk Ryan Anderson. Anderson was upset at the call and drew a technical foul. Phillips made three of four foul shots and then hit a basket with the possession. The five-point possession put the game out of reach. The Lightning don’t play again until Dec. 27 when they travel to Mississauga to play the Power. The Lightning are now 11-5 on the season, in second place in the NBL and Central Conference behind the Brampton A’s. Courtesy of: lfpress.com
