Regular Season Round 34: Austin T. - Texas L. 122-97

Date: January 3, 2014
When they’re playing at home, the Austin Toros have been one of the better teams in the NBA Development League. Austin (7-6) extended its home winning streak to four games with a 122-97 win against the Texas Legends (9-5) on Friday. The Toros are 6-2 at home but are still second to last in the Central Division standings, held back by a 1-4 mark on the road. Part of the home success has been frequent support from NBA-assigned players. In five of their six home wins, the Toros’ starting lineup has featured San Antonio Spurs guard Nando De Colo. “I love playing with those guys,” Eric Dawson said. “Their basketball IQ is high, and they make us better. They make me better when I’m working with them.” De Colo scored 21 points, while fellow NBA assignee Malcolm Thomas scored 15 in his fifth game with Austin. It was a well-rounded offensive effort, though. Nine players scored at least eight points. Dawson had 21, including 12 in the first quarter. “We just wanted to get out there and share the ball,” Dawson said. “We have a bunch of great players out there. We were at our best when everyone was touching the ball.” Courtney Fells, who finished with 12 points, completed an alley-oop for the game’s opening points, and the Toros never trailed. Austin ended the first quarter on an 11-4 run, capped by an odd trip to the free-throw line by De Colo. He hit all three free throws to give Texas a 34-23 lead after he was fouled attempting a midcourt shot at the buzzer. From there it was a blowout, and Austin led 64-34 with two minutes remaining in the first half. Texas shot a dismal 8 for 22 from the field in the second quarter and 34 for 87 in the game. Austin also forced Texas into 19 turnovers, 12 of those on steals, and the Toros won the rebounding battle 50-45. Texas did outscore Austin in the second half but never came close on the scoreboard. It was Austin’s second win of the season against a team with a winning record, both of which have come against Texas. The teams play the second game of a back-to-back series at Cedar Park Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Courtesy of: statesman.com
