Regular Season Round 35: Santa Cruz W. - Canton C. 85-104
Date: January 4, 2014
On the heels of their biggest win under coach Casey Hill the Santa Cruz Warriors had their worst home performance of the season. The Warriors suffered their biggest home loss of the year at the hands of the hot-shooting Canton Charge 104-85 Saturday night at Kaiser Permanente Area. Just a day ago the Warriors (10-7) had beaten NBA D-league West rivals the Reno Bighorns 95-85 for sole possession of first place in the division leaping past the Idaho Stampede (10-6), but Saturday’s loss in front of a sold out Santa Cruz crowd sent them back into second place. “We got outplayed today,” Hill said. “We got outplayed for four quarters.” The Charge started off the game with an impressive opening quarter where they shot 76.5 percent from the field (13 of 17) to jump out to a 35-24 lead. They never gave up the advantage, and eventually it ballooned to 23 points midway through the third. “It’s something that we’ve been struggling with all year,” said Warriors guard Kiwi Gardner, who finished with nine points and nine assists. “I don’t feel like we’re good enough yet to let a team get up 20 points on us and comeback and take the lead.” Santa Cruz did cut the lead to single digits late in the fourth quarter as guard Cam Jones nailed back-to-back shots and forward Dominic McGuire, who was making his first appearance on the court for the Warriors, converted a three-point play with just less than 6 minutes left in the game. “Our defense got better,” Hill said. “But they got back control and we got tired. Our defense kind of slipped.” Canton guard Gilbert Brown started what would be a 16-6 run to close out the game with a corner three. Brown -- 15 points, five assists and three steals -- was one of five Charge players that finished in double figures. As a team, they shot 49.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range. “They played as a team,” Hill said. “They moved the ball and they made the open shots. We played with no heart today." Cam Jones paced the Warriors with 18 points -- 11 coming in the final quarter -- and he added three rebounds and four assists. Dewayne Dedmon logged his 11th double-double in the last 12 games with 11 points and 11 rebounds. McGuire, who the Warriors officially signed earlier in the day, was playing for the first time in two months because of a foot fracture. The 6-foot-9 forward came in with 342 games of NBA experience and it showed as he deposited 16 points and grabbed six rebounds after just one practice with the team. “I was happy with the first game, but we still lost,” McGruire said. “I would’ve rather had the win, but I felt good about tonight.” The Warriors will have to recover quickly as they’ll make the trip to Reno for the NBA D-League Showcase, which will start with a Monday afternoon contest against Fort Wayne Mad Ants at 12:45 p.m. Courtesy of: register-pajaronian.com
