Regular Season Round 35: Austin T. - Texas L. 114-122

Date: January 4, 2014
After a 25-point victory over the Texas Legends the previous night, the Austin Toros entered Saturday night’s rematch looking to capitalize. The 2013-14 season has been an unfair tease for the Toros, and this weekend failed to buck the trend. The Toros lost 122-114. Entering Saturday night, the Toros (7-7) had all but three of their games decided by double digits — such is life for a team ravaged by injury, lack of size and inconsistent rhythm. “We have to do the things that don’t show up on the stat sheet,” NB Development League veteran Eric Dawson said before contributing his sixth double-double of the season. Unfortunately for the Toros, everything in their favor appeared in the stat sheet but didn’t translate to a second consecutive victory. Overall, they shot 50 percent from the field, score 114 points and received outstanding performances from several players. Former Longhorn Myck Kabongo controlled the game with his 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Flip Murray continued his recent surge by contributing 35 points. But it was defense that ultimately proved to be the Toros’ kryptonite. Scoring 114 points and shooting 50 percent is great until you allow 122 points, 49 percent overall shooting and 41 percent 3-point efficiency. By doing that, the Toros handicapped themselves and failed to reach two games over .500 for the first time this season — though they lost by only six. Melvin Ely’s 32 points and eight rebounds led the Legends’ victory. Courtesy of: statesman.com
