Regular Season Round 67: Cleveland C. - Indiana P. 78-82
Date: January 5, 2014
All-Star forward Paul George had a team-high 16 points and six assists, as the Indiana Pacers held off the stubborn Cavaliers 82-78 on Sunday night at Quicken Loans Arena. The Pacers (27-6) have the best defensive team in the league, but had trouble stopping Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters in the fourth. He had 12 of his 14 points in the fourth, as the Cavs made up a 16-point deficit. It was Waiters' bobblehead night. Center Anderson Varejao's dunk with 45 seconds left pulled the Cavs to within one point, 79-78. Pacers center Roy Hibbert split two free throws with 43.4 seconds remaining for a two-point edge, 80-78. However, Waiters missed a drive to the basket in the waning seconds, and he fouled Hibbert with 7.9 seconds left. Again, the 7-foot-2 center made one of two free throws for an 81-78 lead. That set up one last gasp by the Cavs (11-23), who tried to send the game into overtime for the fourth consecutive home game. It was not to be, as forward Earl Clark stepped out of bounds with 6.9 seconds remaining, turning the ball over to the Pacers. Pacers power forward David West went to the foul line and split two free throws with 5.4 seconds left for a four-point margin. It was the Pacers' ninth consecutive win over the Cavs. The Cavaliers were playing without their top two point guards in Kyrie Irving and Jarrett Jack. Hibbert finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while West had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Guard C.J. Miles had a game-high 21 points and six rebounds for the Cavs, while power forward Tristan Thompson added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cleveland center Anderson Varejao pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. He is averaging 16.7 rebounds over his last three games. The Cavaliers shot 34.2 percent from the field, compared to the Pacers' 36.4 percent. The Cavs outrebounded the Pacers 49-42. Three times in the third quarter, the Cavaliers trailed by two points and had a chance to tie the score or take the lead. They failed to take advantage each time. The final time came with 2:58 remaining in the third when guard Matthew Dellavedova buried a 3-pointer, which left the score at 60-58. The Pacers closed the third quarter on a 12-5 run to lead by nine points, 67-58, entering the fourth. The Pacers closed the second quarter on an 18-8 run to take a 44-35 lead at halftime.
