Regular Season Round 36: Santa Cruz W. - Ft.Wayne MA 97-101
Date: January 6, 2014
Despite 23 points from Cameron Jones and 20 points from Kiwi Gardner off the bench, the Santa Cruz Warriors squandered a 22-point lead and lost 101-97 to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Monday in their first game of the NBA D-League Showcase at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nev. It is Santa Cruz's second straight loss and fifth in its last seven games. Ron Howard led all scorers with 28 points -- converting 16 of 19 from the free-throw line, both all-time highs for a Santa Cruz opponent. Trey McKinney Jones added 25 for the Mad Ants, while Memphis Grizzlies assignee Jamaal Franklin scored 15 off the bench. The Warriors (10-8) led by as many as 18 points in the first quarter, extending its lead to 22 in the second. But the Mad Ants (8-7) enjoyed a 13-0 run in the third quarter and converted 39 of 49 free-throw attempts in the game -- both league-highs for foul shots made and attempted this season. Santa Cruz, on the other hand, was 25 of 33 from the charity stripe. The fourth quarter featured five ties, with Fort Wayne grabbing its first lead of the game when McKinney Jones converted a layup with 3:54 remaining in regulation. Santa Cruz managed to stay close, and the two teams were tied at 97-all with 49.3 seconds remaining. But Fort Wayne appropriately sealed the victory from the free throw line, knocking down four straight. The Warriors' 22-point lead is the largest lead blown in a loss in team history. Newcomer Dominic McGuire pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and Dewayne Dedmon had 14 points and blocked a game-high four shots for the Warriors, who shot 40.7 percent to Fort Wayne's 35.4 percent. Santa Cruz also held advantages in rebounds (48-42), points in the paint (48-32) and blocks (5-2). But Fort Wayne had more steals (16-6) and committed fewer turnovers (13-23). Daniel Nwaelele added 15 points and Hilton Armstrong had 13 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the free throw line. Santa Cruz will look to bounce back on Thursday when it takes on the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (13-3) in its second and final game from the D-League Showcase in Reno. The game, which will tip off at 12:45 p.m., is a rematch of last year's D-League finals when the Vipers defeated the Warriors 2-0 in their best-of-3 final. Courtesy of: santacruzsentinel.com
