Regular Season Round 13: Maccabi Ashdod - Elitzur Ramla 80-64

Round 13 in D1 means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Ashdod where host Maccabi Ashdod (10-2) beat league's leader Elitzur Ramla (9-2) 80-64 on Monday evening. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Maccabi Ashdod's pressure prevailed and they won that period 19-8 extending their advantage to 16 points. They made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. Maccabi Ashdod outrebounded Elitzur Ramla 30-14 including a 22-11 advantage in defensive rebounds. American guard Candice Wiggins (180-87, college: Stanford) fired 20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Her fellow American import forward Tiffany Jackson (191-85, college: Texas) chipped in 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Four Maccabi Ashdod players scored in double figures. American guard Allison Hightower (178-88, college: LSU, agency: Josep and Nicolas) produced 19 points and the former international forward Michal Epstein (180-81, college: Boston U.) added 12 points respectively for lost side. Maccabi Ashdod have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. Defending champion Elitzur Ramla dropped to the second place with two games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Maccabi Ashdod. Elitzur Ramla will play next round against strong Maccabi Ramat Hen trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Maccabi Ashdod will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Ramat Hasharon on the road.
