Regular Season Round 69: Denver N. - Boston C. 129-98

Date: January 7, 2014
Randy Foye had 23 points, Ty Lawson scored 19 with 13 assists and the Denver Nuggets led wire-to-wire in a 129-98 rout of the Boston Celtics on Tuesday. Kenneth Faried added 21 points and 13 rebounds and J.J. Hickson scored 17 for the Nuggets, who have won three in a row on the heels of an eight-game losing streak. The Celtics had several losing streaks extended. They have dropped five in a row and eight of their last nine games overall and five straight on the road. They have lost five in a row and nine of their last 10 in Denver. "I didn't think we played hard enough," Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said. Earlier Tuesday, the Celtics acquired guard Jerryd Bayless from Memphis and forward Ryan Gomes from Oklahoma City in a three-team trade, sending guard Courtney Lee and a 2016 second-round draft pick to Memphis. They waived Gomes. Bayless scored six points in 25 1/2 minutes off the bench. The Celtics were led by 17 points from Jeff Green and 15 from Brandon Bass. Boston's Jared Sullinger was ejected in the third quarter after picking up two Flagrant 1 fouls in 23 seconds. He fouled Hickson hard from behind for the first foul and elbowed Faried in the head at the other end on a move in the paint. Denver coach Brian Shaw received two technical fouls and was ejected with 2:43 left in the third for arguing with officials during a timeout while his team was up by 28. Shaw said he asked the referees why Evan Fournier was called for an offensive foul before the timeout, drawing the first technical. He admitted saying "something" to draw the second technical and said he felt bad for getting tossed. "We punish criers. We don't cry," he said. "Fortunately for us," Shaw said, "it wasn't a situation where it cost us." The Nuggets shot 51.8 percent in the game and outrebounded the Celtics 56-35. They shot 54.5 percent in the first quarter for a 31-23 lead, going up by as many as 12. Darrell Arthur and Fournier made 3s as Denver scored the first eight points of the second quarter for a 16-point lead. The Nuggets stretched a 13-point advantage to 23 at halftime with a 10-0 run sparked by a Foye 3 and shot 57.1 percent in the quarter. The lead reached 31 on another Foye 3 3/12 minutes into the second half and ballooned as high as 32. It was 103-78 going into the fourth and was never closer than 23 after that.
