Regular Season Round 23: Brampton A's - London L. 95-107

Date: January 9, 2014
The London Lightning are once again sitting on top of the National Basketball League of Canada standings thanks to a hard-fought 107-95 win over the league’s now No. 2 ranked Brampton A’s. Trailing Brampton by a half game when the two teams hit the floor of the Budweiser Gardens on Thursday night (Jan. 9), it looked like the A’s were on their way to widening that gap, getting out to an early 28-19 first quarter lead over London. Jolted from their early reverie, it wasn’t long though until the hometown favourites bolted back to take control of the game, much to the delight of the Lightning faithful. Outscoring Brampton 28-12 in the second quarter, London outpaced the A’s 60-55 over the final two frames to earn Thursday's win. Once again, Marvin Phillips was the big man on the score sheet, leading the Lightning with 20 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Garrett Williamson with 19 points and veteran Tim Ellis shooting for 18. Guard Stephen McDowell wasn’t long in shaking off the rust of a year on the sidelines, posting 14 points in his first game out with London. Brampton guard Cedric Moodie and centre Cavell Johnson were one and two for the A’s, recording 19 and 18 points respectively. The hardwood goes back into storage at Budweiser Gardens for the next two-weeks as the Lightning head out on a five game road trip. Starting Saturday (Jan. 11) in Charlottetown up against the Island Storm before stops in Moncton, Windsor, Halifax and St John, the team won’t see home again until Jan. 22 when they play host to the Ottawa Skyhawks.
