Regular Season Round 39: Austin T. - Texas L. 105-114
Date: January 12, 2014
A poor defensive third quarter was too much to overcome as the Austin Toros fell to the Texas Legends 114-105 Sunday in an NBA Development League game at Cedar Park Center. Texas (12-8) shot 13-for-25 — 52 percent — from the field and knocked down all six free throws in the 32-point quarter. In the other three quarters, the Legends shot a combined 40.8 percent from the field. The difference was that Texas found time and space below the basket in the third quarter. After attempting 13 3-pointers in the first half, the Legends went inside and scored 22 points in the paint. “We allowed them to get out and get early looks” in the third quarter, Toros guard Flip Murray said. “We turned the ball over a lot, and that gave them the confidence to finish on the offensive end.” Murray had a game-high 31 points for Austin, but the offense seemed out of rhythm without Nando De Colo. He had played the past five games with the Toros and averaged 23.3 points, but he was recalled by the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday morning. Texas never relinquished the lead after an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter. After a 3-pointer by Murray gave Austin a 60-59 lead, Texas responded with eight consecutive points in the paint and eventually pushed its lead to 12 before the start of the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, Austin (9-9) cut the lead to single digits, but Texas closed out the victory from the free-throw line. The Legends led 51-48 after a controversial end to the first half. Melvin Ely was fouled attempting a 3-pointer at the buzzer, which was disputed by Toros coach Ken McDonald, who picked up a technical foul. Texas then hit three of the four free throws. It had been an evenly played, sloppy first half before the Legends’ late trip to the free-throw line. Texas went 19-for-50 from the field, while Austin shot the ball better (19-for-41) but committed nine first-half turnovers. It was the sixth of 10 meetings this season between the in-state rivals, and the Frisco-based Legends lead the season series 4-2. Courtesy of: statesman.com
