Regular Season Round 25: Halifax R. - Moncton M. 115-120 OT

Date: January 16, 2014
There was no rabbit in the hat the second time the Halifax Rainmen went looking. An improbable final 40 seconds of regulation time helped the Rainmen force an extra period Thursday night in Moncton but the Miracles managed to hang on for a 120-115 victory, prolonging Halifax’s road woes. Halifax, in the National Basketball League of Canada cellar with a 4-21 mark, has yet to win in 12 contests this season away from the Metro Centre. Stanley Robinson scored 25 points and Trayvon Lathan added 24 to carry the Miracles, who used a significant size advantage to outrebound the Rainmen 67-51 and outscore them 70-50 in the paint. But the home side’s atrocious work from the free-throw line nearly allowed the Rainmen to sneak away with an overtime win. With 41 seconds remaining, Moncton had a four-point lead (105-101) and the ball, with Halifax in the position of having to foul to stop the clock. But over a stretched-out span of 24 seconds, the Miracles clanked five of six foul shots and the Rainmen gratefully accepted the charity. Malcolm Grant’s hoop made it 105-103 with 17 seconds to go. Then, after Moncton’s Jermaine Dailey hit one of two free throws, Olu Famutimi banked in a three-pointer with two seconds left to tie the contest at 106-106 and send it into overtime. The close score shouldn’t have come as a surprise. Moncton (9-16) had won three of the first four games this season between the two clubs but only by a cumulative one point. Halifax’s previous victory over the Miracles was by six points, while Moncton had persevered by margins of two, three and two. In overtime, Lathan scored seven points and the Miracles survived despite six more errant shots in 12 tries from the stripe. Famutimi’s deuce cut Moncton’s once five-point lead to 116-115 with 57 seconds remaining. He missed a three-point attempt for the tie after Johnny Mayhane hit two straight foul shots. Lathan, after missing two from the line, finished the scoring with a layup after a Halifax miss. Halifax played a solid first quarter, using a pressure defence to force nine turnovers that helped the guests assume a 23-19 lead. Centre Tim Parham’s putback and a Jason Williams jumper from the free-throw line erased a four-point deficit late in the second and the teams went to halftime deadlocked at 46-46. Williams had eight in the third as the Rainmen forged a 76-70 cushion but Moncton came back in the fourth and was up 103-97 after Travis George’s hoop with two minutes remaining. Forward George Goode paced Halifax with 18 points and Parham, the league’s leading rebounder, posted his eighth double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Williams also scored 17 points while Grant had 16, Chris Matthews 13, JuJuan Cooley 12 and Famutimi 11. In a reflection of the teams’ different offensive styles, Moncton went to the line 55 times and Halifax only 22 times. Halifax returns home to host the London Lightning (18-7) on Saturday night and the Mississauga Power (7-21) on Sunday afternoon. Courtesy of: thechronicleherald.ca
