Regular Season Round 26: Mississauga P. - Halifax R. 93-102

Date: January 19, 2014
The Halifax Rainmen may finally be hitting their stride. With 1,920 energized fans looking on, the Rainmen followed up Saturday’s emotional 113-110 upset of the London Lightning by defeating the Mississauga Power 102-93 on Sunday night at the Metro Centre. “It was very important to come back and get a win today to show everybody that we’ve turned that curve and that yesterday wasn’t a fluke,” Halifax guard Dami Sapara said after the Rainmen pulled the plug on Mississauga. “I think we’re turning that corner right now and this is around the time you wanna turn the corner, leading into the playoffs.” Halifax now has wins in three of its last four starts. The team is assured a berth in the National Basketball League of Canada’s all-inclusive playoffs, though it still occupies the cellar with a 6-21 mark. Shooting guard Chris Matthews came off the bench to top the Rainmen on Sunday with 21 points, including a dozen as Halifax survived a Power surge in the fourth quarter. Swingman Jason Williams, coming off a 31-point effort against London, went 7-for-10 from the floor on his way to 20 points. Point guard JuJuan Cooley and shooting guard Olu Famutimi added 12 each and power forward Raven Barber had 11. Shooting guard Morgan Lewis and forward Dwight McCombs paced Mississauga with double-doubles. Lewis drained 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while McCombs muscled his way inside for 24 points and 14 boards. The Rainmen used a 12-0 run early in the third quarter to open a 59-44 cushion. They were up 73-68 going into the fourth, then turned to their defence after the Power fought back to tie the game at 89-89 on a Shamus Ferguson dunk with 4:45 remaining. “Our whole thing is defence leads to offence so we’re gonna make our defence the main thing,” said Barber, who scored nine straight points for Halifax to finish up the third quarter and start the fourth. After two Williams free throws restored the Rainmen lead, centre Tim Parham blocked a McCombs shot under the Halifax hoop and Cooley dropped a deuce at the other end. Lewis’s bucket with 1:41 left to cut Halifax’s lead to 93-91 but the Rainmen counted the next nine points. They didn’t allow Mississauga to score again until conceding Alex Johnson a layup with nine seconds to go. “Defensively I feel like we’re getting better each and every game,” said Sapara, a defensive specialist often called up to guard an opponent’s top offensive threat. Both teams were playing for the third time in four nights. Mississauga (8-22) led 22-20 after the first quarter and Halifax was up 47-42 at the break. There were 10 lead changes in the first half but none after backup guard Malcolm Grant put the Rainmen in front to stay at 37-36. On Saturday night, Halifax rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter to douse the Lightning. Halifax’s next challenge comes Thursday night in Saint John, N.B., against the Mill Rats. Saint John is 6-1 in the season series against the Rainmen, who are still looking for their first road win after 12 tries. Courtesy of: thechronicleherald.ca
