Regular Season Round 6: Valmiera - Tln Kalev 93-69

Rather predictable result when third ranked Latvian Valmiera (5-5) rolled over at home 5th ranked Estonian Tln Kalev (3-6) 93-69 on Tuesday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 93-69. Valmiera made 18-of-18 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for guard Janis Kaufmanis (186-89) who led his team to a victory with 23 points. Forward Ernests Kalve (200-87) contributed with 15 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Ghanian-American Asenso Ampim (203-88, college: Columbia) replied with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Reimo Tamm (188-84) added 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for Tln Kalev. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Valmiera maintains third position in Group A with 5-5 record having four points less than leader Pyrinto. Loser Tln Kalev keeps the fifth place with six games lost. Valmiera will face bottom-ranked BC Rakvere (#7) at home in the next round. Tln Kalev will play against Jekabpils and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
